Scared to take weekly vitamin D, 50,000 IU
« on: April 02, 2014, 09:52:59 PM »
Hi, I've just been prescribed a weekly vitamin D 50,000 IU, which I am scared to take because I read the warnings...anyone knowledgeable in this area?  Is it safe to take?  Help!

I assume your vit d is low and you only have to take it until its normal again. My husband and my friend took high doses without problems. I take 5000 a day to keep my numbers normal. No problems at all.

Warnings? I've been taking it for a year and a half. Zero side effects. I've only went from a 13 to a 27 after a year, so I'm still continuing to take it per my docs orders. Getting sun exposure in moderation and eating vitamin D rich foods is important too.

I took that for a while...prescription ran out and never got a new one, which I know I really should.  Anyway, I never had any negative effects.

What warnings?

My D was 25 in 2010 and 59 now.    I take 2000-3000iu a day.  My dr had me go on a little a day steady.

Yes my levels were low; my doctor said take it once a week for 8 weeks and then once a month.  My sister has been taking it (50,000 IU) once a week for a year with no problems either (and she's a Registered Nurse).  I just get so scared when I read the side effects and other cautions that come with my medications, I'm such a mess!  I think I'll call my doctor tomorrow to see exactly how low my vitamin D is, then maybe I'll feel justified in taking it.

Thanks everyone for your replies :)

Sorry everyone, I guess I should explain what I meant by 'warnings'; it said when vitamin D is taking in an excessive amount or higher than prescribed amount it can cause problems.  And I guess I got scared because 50,000 IU's seemed like a lot to take---but I guess if it's just once a week, and I'm low to begin with, it's ok.  Right?

Yep.

If you are low, the idea is to bring it up.  That amounts to 7000 iu a day.    Levels should be 30-60 at least.

And Vitamin D is not a medication.  D is really a hormone that tells much of our body functions to work.   People are low because of indoor work days and inside AC in summer.  Also sunscreen keeps D from absorption.

I had to take B12 nasal spray of 2mg a day for a year to bring my B12 up

Yes, find out your D level.

Update us on how you are doing.

Your doctor wouldn't give you a dangerously high dose of a supplement.  I was surprised too when I heard the amount I would be taking, but it's apparently not uncommon when people have very low levels.

Never heard of 50,000 a day. 5,000 IU is what I take and have been taking for like 4 years. got my first blood test done 4 months ago and my Vit D was 54. So im doing something right in that aspect. Im sure your doctor knows what he is prescribing though. Its only a vitamin, u be ok!  :action-smiley-065:

studies have found that between five and 30 minutes of sun exposure to your unprotected face, arms, legs or back between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. two to three times every week is enough for your body to produce all the D3 it needs [source: National Institutes of Health - Office of Dietary Supplements].
Under picture-perfect conditions, the human body is able to produce as much as 10,000 IU to 20,000 IU of vitamin D3 in just 30 minutes [

Valleyplayer, I just want to clarify, it's 50,000 IU a week not everyday.  That would be pretty excessive!
