Afraid of Oral Cancer
« on: March 31, 2014, 10:22:43 PM »
I have been a complete hypochondriac for most of my life.  The last few years have gotten worse because each time I have gone for any regular checkup, the doctors send me for some kind of test and then I always get a false positive, which results in more tests and then follow-ups, consuming months of my life with anxiety.  My latest challenge is the dentist finding a spot on an xray, thinking it might be a dental problem, but sending me to oral surgeon to be sure.  Xrays at oral surgeon showed no spot on first xray and he told me to come back in 2 months.  After two months of total panic, I went for follow-up and they now saw small spot that they think is what the dentist saw, but don't think it's anything serious at all, but want me to come back again in six months to be sure.  Not wanting to wait six months, I went back to dentist, had a fourth set of xrays, which showed nothing, but now he wants me to go see another specialist to be sure, even though nothing looks too worrisome.  If no one is that worried, I don't understand how going for a fifth set of xrays will help me and it is only fueling my anxiety to keep this thing going.    3 professionals have said it doesn't look like anything serious, and yet I can't get closure.  I am going crazy and sure of the worst outcome. - I am afraid to go for more and afraid not to go because someone suggested it. I would love to hear if others have been through similar things.

Thanks!

What a jackass your dentist is!  I'd get him on the phone and tell him "look Doc, iI suffer from severe HA, and these repeat checks are making me mental...can we do whatever we need to, and put this thing to rest?".  Whatever it may be, its obviously not growing (which is awesome), but I don'tthink he realizes the strain this is causing you.  Demand that he and the oral surgeon put ttheir heads together and provide intelligent answers.  Personally, I'd bet its nothing serious because it ddoesn't change.  Be well!

Thanks for the reply.  Repeated tests are certainly very scary for those of us with HA.  Luckily, I have a primary care physician who really understands this.  I am still trying to sort all this out.  Your advice to try to get them to talk and figure out answers is helpful - think I will take that route rather than agreeing to any more testing.  Thanks.

Sorry to stay on this topic, but the latest is that I went back to dentist and they want me to see an endodontist for evaluation of the area - I think endodontists do root canals, so that would mean that they aren't thinking oral cancer right? However, my HA thinking says they are really wanting another person to tell me there's a serious problem.  Isn't this thinking crazy? They would be sending me to a doctor and not endodontist if they thought cancer, right?  I already saw oral surgeon who thought it was nothing, but the dentist just doesn't want to let it go.  I think he is just thinking dental health, but my fears are getting the best of me and saying it must be more.  I have no symptoms, just something that showed up on one xray, but not on another.  He was talking about abscess and infection that could be there.  They wouldn't be sending me to endodontist if they thought there if it was something more than a dental issue right?

Thanks to all of you!  This discussion board is great!  Hope I can help others out too.

Oral cancer would show up on physical examination...you see that in the mouth not on an X-ray.  Have you asked him specifically what he is concerned about?  If they believe there is a spot on the jaw, then do a cat scan and be done with it.  Ask him for it and put it to rest.
