Left side of upper chest hurts when I breathe??
« on: March 30, 2014, 07:36:43 PM »
Okay so I've always had some health anxiety as long as I can remember, but some of you may know from previous posts that I'm a young breast cancer survivor, dx at age 24 (30 now).  That's what really spun my HA out of control and I've struggled with it ever since.

My issue right now is that for the past 3 weeks or, whenever I'm sitting kinda hunched over and breathe in deeply my chest hurts above my breast, kinda between the top of my breast and my collar bone.  It's the same side the cancer was on.  Logically of course, I don't really think this has anything to do with cancer or a recurrence, and neither does my husband, but every little thing freaks me the #%&$ out now.

I DID just have my 5 year mammogram about 3 weeks ago and that was perfectly normal (THANK GOD!), and this started directly after the mammo so maybe it has something to do with that?  Pinched nerve?  Though the pain is more of a dull, achy pain than a sharp or burning pain which I usually associate with nerve stuff.

UGH, I hate myself.  This anxiety over every teeny tiny thing is debilitating and exhausting.  Can anyone please help me out here?  Does this sound like something to be concerned about?  Has anyone else had someone remotely similar and had it be nothing?

sounds like muscle strain, the kind of pain you get when you spend a fair amount of time sitting down with poor posture. The way your shoulder and back muscles wrap around, they cause those sensations in that area of your chest when strained. I get it a lot.

Thanks, Lunatone, for replying so quickly.  The thing is it doesn't really feel like a muscle strain.  It only happens if I sit in a certain way and breath in deeply.  It's just in one small area on my chest, probably the size of a quarter or silver dollar.  It's very strange.

It's some kind of muscle or nerve thing, I've had pains like that too. If it was cancer related I'm sure the feeling would be constant and not just when you're sitting in a certain way

Thanks a lot, kristinsanxiety.  I know you're probably right, but any time I have any type of odd sensation/pain that I can't explain my mind automatically jumps to something terrible.  Logically pain doesn't always mean something bad, but if I can't explain it, who's to say it's not?  That's how my twisted mind works.  Ugh, I wish I could just let this go.

I have an appointment with my doctor for a simple, unrelated issue on Thursday so I will ask about this then.  Really hoping he doesn't freak me out by telling me it could be something awful and we better rush to check it out  :(  In the meantime, does anyone else have any ideas about this?

It really honestly sounds like a muscle is pulled or sore - muscle pain gets worse before it gets better.  :winking0008:

I think I wrote this in my initial post, but in case you missed it, it started 3 weeks ago.  I remember because it was a day or so after my mammogram.  So I think that's a little too long for pulled muscle pain to last  :(  Otherwise I would agree with you.

Okay sorry to keep going on about this, but I just had my doctor appt today.  He said the pain is probably a soft tissue "injury" from the mammogram and that it can take a couple months to get better.  It's been a month already.  But he said if it doesn't get better in a month we can re-evaluate then (based on my history).

THE THING IS... like an idiot, I totally forgot to tell him that I think it's actually gotten a bit worse since it's been there, not better.  And it's been a month.  And the fact that he said we may re-evaluate in a month if it's not better is really scaring me since it hasn't shown any signs of getting better, only worse (it's still very mild pain though, like a 1 on 1-10 scale).

AAANNDD, the other day I developed a rash on the front of that breast.  It's nowhere near the pain area (which is slightly above the breast), and looks a lot like a heat rash you get when you sweat but it wasn't in the fold of the skin - actually on the front which seems odd.  Hydrocortisone seemed to help a bit but then the skin of my nipple started getting dry and scaly looking, and the skin was flaking off!  Maybe it had to do with the rash drying out and healing?  I don't know, but it freaked me out.  And now I have a tiny white spot under the skin of my nipple in an entirely DIFFERENT area.  I'm sure it wasn't there before, and it's not raised - it's really under the skin.

This is throwing me into a tizzy.  Someone please tell me if I'm stringing a bunch of unrelated things together or if I should get a second opinion.  Dreadful, terrible things keep running through my mind.
