Scared of sedation, any suggestions?
« on: July 02, 2006, 06:00:15 AM »
I've been suffering from many stomach/throat problems for years now, yet avoiding the tests (colonoscopy, endoscopy) due to fear of sedation. This was made all the easier since I haven't had insurance the past couple years and had no choice either way. However, I might be able to get my insurance back and I know I really need those tests. Honestly though, I'm not sure if I can do it. The idea of sedation petrifies me and I'm scared I'd go into a full blown panic attack right there. I have no idea what to do! Does anyone have any suggestions, or has anyone had a similar experience? If so, how did you deal with it? Thanks for you time everyone.

i suffer from fear of being sedated talk to your doc they ususally give a small pill to take b4 they start to calm you down and you feel nice and relaxed it works really well. the hospital team are great if you feel panicky they help you through by talking to you and getting you to relax you will be fine go for it and after you proberly will think what was all the fuss about.best of luck and talk to you doc about your fears im sure it will all be ok.

Trust me, you're not alone.  I know exactly what you're going through!  I too have been having digestive problems, and was referred to a Gastro by my GP, for a colonoscopy.  My fear isn't related to sedation, mine is something else.  I have yet to make my appointment.  :o

The medication given before a procedure such as a scope is usually "Versed."  Versed is a class of Benzodiazepines; think Ativan.  Benzodiazepines are anti-anxiety meds.  :)  But, like the other member said; express your concerns to the nurses & doc before your consult/procedure.

I've been a nurse for 10 years.  I've monitored numerous sedated patients post procedure, and I've never seen, nor heard of any patient having a panic attack...  during, or after.  The patient is always closely monitored before, during, and after procedure.

Best wishes!
