Anxiety or CFS?! Someone Please Help Calm My Fears :)
« on: March 25, 2014, 10:27:47 PM »
Hey everyone,

So I have a question that I figure would be better answered on this forum than a doctor, since some people who know a lot more about CFS than a lot of docs!

I've had anxiety (Panic/GAD) probably since I was 20 years old (I'm now 28), with years where it wasn't an issue. The past year I've had severe anxiety, most likely due to a job change, starting graduate school, getting married, and buying a house. Most of my symptoms are typical of anxiety disorders, including:

Pounding Heart
Sweaty Palms
Feeling that something terrible is about to happen
Trouble swallowing, only when nervous
OCD Thoughts

The thing that is limiting my recovery, however, is the fear that I have CFS. This is due to the fact that my workouts have gotten progressively worse over the past 2 years. I used to run or workout almost every day. For example, I'd run 4-6 miles with no problems. Over the last few years, I've had more and more days where I feel tired and need to walk. I occasionally have days where I feel good and can run the whole way, but more often than not, I can't. Essentially, I feel like my body doesn't recover like it used to. My legs often feel fatigued (which really scares me). However, I don't think there is a strength loss, which makes me feel like it can't be something sinister like ALS or MS.

Again, the biggest issue is that my muscles feel fatigued a lot of the time, which affects my workouts, but not necessarily my day to day living (other than giving me anxiety, which DOES affect my life). Is this typical of CFS, or would it be a lot worse? How does CFS usually start/progress? Should I worry that it's going to get worse, or is this pretty typical of bad anxiety disorders?

ANY help would be much appreciated, because it would help me rid some of my anxiety that is wearing my body down. Also, just an FYI, I have had blood workups for thyroid, liver function, celiac disease, and some muscle enzyme test, which all came back normal.

Maybe try altering your diet and supplementing a bit with some dietary supplements such as Fish Oil.

Are you getting enough of the respective macronutrients? How about micronutrients? Is your water intake high enough?

Also, try lifting weights as well. Many people may become tired from running, but when lifting weights you also get that "pump" and increase in energy.

A safe supplement for energy is a Vitamin B Complex. Since it's water soluble, you merely urinate the excess out (I mean, take the amount within reason).

Get enough sunlight as well. Many people become tired due to a lack of Vitamin D.

Do you experience consistent fatigue or does it come and go ?

Do you feel better after sleep ?

Does exercise make your fatigue worse ?

Look from my experience all those symptoms can be very easily be caused by Anxiety. The brain is a powerful thing and if you think hard enough you have something you are bound to end up experiencing some symptoms.

That being said with all the people I have spoken to that have CFS one thing is very clear all cases are different. Best advice go to your GP and ask for a referral to a CFS specialist this is how I was finally Diagnosed.

Hope this helps

Yep, nobody on this board can readily diagnose you. I will say anxiety can be a SYMPTOM from another medical illness or it's own DISORDER. So you definitely sound anxious, the question is whether there is more going on.

All fatigue is not chronic fatigue. Poppadr3w is right on with his recommendations. Inadequate nutrition can be a big cause of fatigue. Protein with each meal is important especially with physical activity. Add to that question: How MUCH are you sleeping?  A large percentage of people are sleep deprived. Some people may truly function fine at 5-6 hours of sleep but that isn't truly enough for optimal function for "most" people. Work on getting a minimum of 7 hours of sleep, up to 9 if possible. If you're really tired and you're sleeping 6 hours a night that would not be considered CFS, it would be considered simple sleep deprivation.

All that said, since there is a change from your personal norm with workouts checking in with your doctor is warranted. Best of luck to you! :action-smiley-065:
