Melanoma scare
« on: March 25, 2014, 06:53:18 PM »
Last night I noticed a black round mole on my left shoulder blade. I tried not to worry too much about it and today at a follow up appointment for my head I showed the doctor it and she instantly was like "I don't like this mole, you need that removed. I'm sending you to dermatologist." I am freaking out. I just had the mole removed and she said it didn't look like the rest of any moles I had and that she wanted to remove it. I am so scared the biopsy is going to be abnormal and I'll have melanoma. I'm 19 :(

I have had odd moles removed before with no issues. Odds are you will be OK.

Hi,
I had a weird asymmetrical mole removed from my leg. After a biopsy turned out it was just a really ugly mole, nothing else. Most moles are just moles, even the scary looking.

She probably just meant that she didn't like the mole because it COULD turn into something sinister many years down the road.  Not that it was anything NOW.  That may as well get it removed before anything HAPPENS in years to come.

A dermatologist is the only dr whose opinion I would take seriously regarding a mole. Any other dr. isn't specifically trained to just look at a mole and determine whether it's something serious or not.  Your dr. is probably just erring on the side of caution. It's good that you are seeing a dermatologist though for peace of mind!

First of all, keep us posted on the biopsy results.

I recently had a very dark mole, about 2mm x 4mm, which seemed to appear overnight, on my thigh. I had a major freak-out, too. According to the biopsy, it was severely atypical. It was re-excised after the biopsy.  So, now I'm constantly doing my own mole checks out of compulsion. Melanoma is probably now my biggest health anxiety issue, and I hate it.

What I wouldn't do to go back to the days of worrying about MS, ALS, and Parkinson's! Now my thumb and index finger twitch like crazy and it doesn't even phase me! I could now care less, if I got MS, unless I got that and worried about melanoma, too.

They said they'll only call me if it's abnormal so I'm basically living everyday so scared for the call. It was smaller than a pencil eraser, black, and slightly elevated. She told me not to expect a call but I feel like they have to say things like that because they don't want you to freak out.

I just had a mole removed that turned out fine.  I was scared of melanoma too as my mole was elevated and growing.  But it was just an ugly mole.  I wouldn't expect a call for two reasons.  One, your mole was round, and two, it was small.

I'm just worried because I generally don't have any moles and it just showed up and was so much darker than any of the few I have :(

My sister also just had one removed that came up suddenly and changed colors and constantly grew.  And it turned out benign.  There's no reason to worry about a mole until you get a call and I really don't think you will.

Mine popped up out of nowhere, too.  I do all the regular self-checks and there's no way I missed it.

I'm sorry I don't have an answer for how long biopsies take, never had one, but I posted because of something that REALLY gets under my skin!!   With all this technology of ours, with how we can talk face to face in a matter of 3 seconds with someone across the world, or how we can send men to space, and a host of other things, the medical profession STILL makes people wait and wait and wait for test results that they are so worried about!  Something is not right with that picture!
