Scared... Just want to vent!
« on: March 24, 2014, 01:43:47 PM »
So tomorrow I'm going for an MRI of my brain with and without contrast. I'm not nervous about laying in the MRI machine since I've gotten two before, but I'm nervous about getting the contrast since I have never gotten it! Of course, I'm worried about the results.  :(

This was a pointless post but I just wanted to type my feelings out and I would appreciate encouraging replies to ease my mind! Thanks.

I am so sorry you are scared.  The doctors do COUNTLESS MRIs with contrasts a day, so they have it down to a science.

Sending positive thoughts for it showing nothing.

Good luck, although I am certain your results will be perfect. When you get them, frame it like a picture and put it on the wall just to remind you every day how much you were worrying over nothing.  :winking0008:

I had a reaction to the contrast dye in the MRI for a brain scan and I'm fine!! I had hives in my neck after and got Benadryl. I'm just letting you know that is your worst case scenario. You'll be fine either way.

I got the contrast, you don't feel It like ct scans, it's up to you tho, there's a lot of controversy over it. What are you getting the mri for?

I had an MRI with contrast of my brain awhile ago.  I am very sensitive to medications and I did not have any problems whatsoever with the contrast.  I drank a lot of water afterwards to try and flush the contrast out of my system as fast as possible.  I am not sure if the water really does help, but it made me feel better.  I wish you luck with your test.

Thank you so much for your replies!!! It makes me feel good to know those of you who are sensitive to medications didn't react, because that's how I am. I plan on drinking a lot of water afterwards, and I'm drinking a lot today, as well.

I'm getting it done for headaches and visual problems mostly. I had one in November without contrast that came back normal, so let's hope this one is normal too.

I would get your kidneys checked before you go, I don't mean to frighten you but there is a lot of controversy over gadolinium, the contrast dye used in an mri

That's why I'm afraid. What would it do to your kidneys?

I don't know what that is - is that the same as the stuff they use in those nuclear stress tests for the heart?  IF so, I had the nuclear stress test with that dye, NOTHING happened at all.  My mom had one, my dad had one, my neighbor had about 3 - NO one had any kind of reaction.  If it's not the same, then sorry I couldn't help you with that.
But I CAN tell you you will be just FINE!  You had the other MRI and all was well, this will be too.

The first time I had contrast, they didn't actually plan on doing it.  The tech came in and said, "They saw something during the scan and want to enhance it with contrast."  Of course I started shaking like a leaf on the table.  Turns out it was nothing more than that, just an area that was harder to see.  All was good.  So, now I'm getting contrast AND I'm freaking out, recipe for disaster, right?  Wrong.  It was totally fine.

Also, I had a reaction to the iodine contrast for a CT, so you'd think I am predisposed to react to contrast.  Nope.  MRI contrast just like saline, nothing to it.  (They treated the iodine contrast with prednisone and I was fine in about 15 minutes.)

You'll be fine as well.

MOST anxiety happens at the subconscious level.  JUST because you don't feel consciously anxious or had a day or two of calm doesn't mean your mind & body are relaxed.  It can take months of reduced anxiety before a body goes back to a more non-reactive state.  - AnxietyZone member Sixpack

I'm not sure if it's the same dye used in stress tests. I don't think so. But thanks so much for your replies! I appreciate it and they made me feel a little more calm about tomorrow.
