Throat issues... I can't take it anymore
« on: March 23, 2014, 04:52:04 PM »
My throat has been bothering me for the better half of a year (started in November, and now its February, isn't letting up, seemily getting worse)
First it started out just a sore throat, and then from that felt a tightness, then feels like something is stuck in my throat all the time. At first I thought that I was just  getting sick, had a round of antibiotics, seemed to not really do anything, went back to the doctors, the doctor said it looked like I had thrush, possibly from the antibiotics but i could have had thrush to begin with just deeper in my throat did the pills for thrush and the mouth wash nothing. Doctor set up gastro apt and barium swallow, took about 2 months to get into these appointments, barrium swallow didn't show anything the gastro said maybe a motility disorder had to scope, wouldn't be able to scope me for 8 months, got into a place myself got a scope, showed redness nothing else. I looked at my throat and I noticed that my tonsils were red and had white on them, when I prodded them tonsil stones came out. this seemed to get rid of if only temporarily the stones. Made an appointment with an ENT. said that i had cryptic tonsils, didn't really say anything about the lump in throat thing, said lots of people have crypitc tonsils and live with them, I asked about surgery, didn't want to do surgery because I'm 25, said to come back in 4 months and I would be looked at again if still contining (waited months for this appointment saw him for a while of 10 minutes max, didn't feel happy with this at all, only 1 other ENT in the city and apparently she has like a  year wait list as well) I booked an appointment for 4 months in the future, the cloest they could do was 6 months, now its going on april and see him on the 15th. coping with these tonsil stones I have been looking in my throat alot,  saw a bone like thing sticking out and freaked out thinking a piece of my spine or something was poking through my neck. google says its my epiglottis, went to the clinnic freaking because I never saw this before and I wanted to make sure all was ok. the nurse joked saying it was an alien (not impressed by the professionalism) and the doctor saw me and said i don't know what you are talking about, I don't see anything, also didn't look well and sent me on my way. I can definitely see my epiglottis by sticking out my tongue far and moving my head a certain way in the mirror, its for sure my epiglottis. I went back to my family doctor and she was like I want to get your thyroid checked I have to go in 2 days to do so, bloodwork and a scan of my neck; which will give results in a few days.

I'm just freaking because the feeling is unrelenting, it feels like food is going to get stuck, like im on the verge of throwing up, i have been having panic attacks daily for the last week and I'm on 2x klonopin a day which seems to do nothing. I'm scared that there is something sinnister going on, but everyone else seems to be brushing it off as anxiety other then my dr who is sending me for more and more tests which is good but at the same time I wished I just got a pat on the back and told its just stress, or I've seen this before or anything, my doctor ended the visit saying maybe your epiglottis is getting in the way or something for some reason which only freaked me out worse...

Debated going to the hosiptal ER but I'm at the point thinking what are they going to do? unless your dying they don't seem to take you seriously. I'm making my family miserable and they don't understand how miserable I am about all of this. anyone have simmilar issues?

Also sucks the chat is down as i can't talk to anyone irl about this, i liked having a safe haven here.

I'm sorry you're having such a hard time with this. I too have cryptic tonsils and tonsil stones, have had them for as long as I can remember. They come and go, I've become an expert at popping them out with my finger (gross I know). I went to the ENT last summer about them b/c I was worried they were causing bad breath and well as being annoying. (I know that feeling you're talking about feeling like something is stuck in your throat). Anyway, they said they could take my tonsils out, but the surgery scares me so I'm just going to deal with it for now.

I don't think you have anything to worry about, you've had so many doctors and specialists look at your throat that if there was anything wrong they would've known. Hang in there!

I feel for you! I have these tonsil stones and their disgusting :( It's very rare I have a day where I don't have one lodged in there, I just pop them out with my finger or a hair slide! (I know gross) but it does the trick!
I done the same thing as you... Focused on my throat because of these... Looked at it with a flashlight and saw my epiglottis! I was terrified to, it's looks so freaky, like a leaf shaped bit of whitish pink cartilage poking up.
Apparently it's normal, I think we just notice it because we're concentrating on it so much by always staring there ( which most people don't usually do).
I've had the throat problems also which my doctor just said is globus, I didn't believe him! However as soon as I got thinking he might be right ( he's an ent specialist)and stopped thinking about it seemed to not be as bad although it's not completely gone.
Get it checked for your own piece of mind but it might just be the tonsil stones making it feel strange seeing as when you have anxiety your more aware of all these things happening!

Another thing that has been bothering me is that I have been getting an itchy/strange feeling in my nose (feels like a nosebleed but not bleeding) do you think that could correlate with my throat issues? the nose thing comes when i take prevacid as of late; if i don't take prevacid my throat burns and i have a lump , if i do i get a lump feeling and my nose burns. im at my wits end.

glad to see someone else saw their epiglotis and freaked out, no one will let me look inside their mouth to see if im just an odditie or what.

I did the EXACT same thing once when I was obsessing about my throat.  I saw my epiglottis and FREAKED.  I went to the ER and they were all, "That is totally normal" and I felt like a fool.

Have you been tested for silent reflux?
