Nervous about going for another MRI with contrast
« on: March 19, 2014, 03:05:29 PM »
I had an MRI of my brain without contrast in November, which came back normal. I developed more symptoms since then, so my ENT doctor agreed to send me for another MRI pretty much for my peace of mind. This time, I'm getting it with and without contrast. I'm nervous about the contrast!

So, of course I am worried about how bad the contrast is for you. Am I getting this second MRI for no reason? I don't want to expose myself to the contrast for no reason. How bad is that stuff for you? Anyone have any experience with MRIs and contrast? I'm going on Tuesday...

I don't think it's any worse than getting a CT scan to be honest. But I would take the MRI with or without the contrast if it could give me some peace of mind. That is hard to come by.

I'm worried about the negative affects it could have on my health in the future and having a reaction. I'm also unsure if it's even necessary since I had one in November, although it was without contrast. I googled and I read some horrible things about the contrast agent!

I have sharp pains in the same spot of my head, palinopsia (after images and trails off of moving objects), weird hallucination type things when I wake up (happened twice), seeing random blobs or dots of colors, etc. I'm not sure if this warrants another MRI.

I think it's good to get it done just for your own peace of mind. I had an MRI with and w/o contrast in December. They check your blood when you get there to make sure your kidneys can handle the contrast. They give you the IV before the MRI begins, do the scan w/o contrast then pull you out and give you the contrast. I was terrified I would have a reaction b/c I'm so sensitive to everything. I didn't feel anything AT ALL! Not during and not after. You'll be fine.

I've done both, and the MRI contrast was no sweat.  Absolutely no ill side-affects.

MOST anxiety happens at the subconscious level.  JUST because you don't feel consciously anxious or had a day or two of calm doesn't mean your mind & body are relaxed.  It can take months of reduced anxiety before a body goes back to a more non-reactive state.  - AnxietyZone member Sixpack

I'm just not sure if it's worth exposing myself to that stuff since I had one in November. (Without contrast)

Well, an MRI without contrast is not an exposure to radiation like a CT scan.  MRI is magnetic fields, so as long as you aren't made of metal (I'm assuming you're not) there's really no risk.  The only main risk I've experienced is not being able to scratch an itch for 45 minutes.  That will drive a person batty!

I just read horrible things about the contrast so I'm worried. Should I just get it? I'm scared it will show something!

I've had the contrast... TWICE... And I'm fine! It really feels like nothing. Don't dwell on the negative! Your anxiety will never get better

So you can't even feel it? I'm just scared I'll have a reaction! I hope everything goes ok.

MRI contrast had no feeling.  They simply told me to drink a lot of water to help flush it through your system.
The Cat Scan contrast has a warm feeling.

I wonder how likely it is that something will be found since I had one in November. Thanks!

I've had the MRI contrast, it was like being injected with placebo.  I did have a reaction to the CT contrast, which was controlled by prednisone.  So, even for someone who is predisposed to reacting to CT contrast, MRI was like nothing.
