Prozac and Insomnia
« on: March 14, 2014, 12:32:34 PM »
I am new to taking Prozac (20 mg) and the side effects have been strange, but the worst one has been not sleeping well. I can fall asleep but a few hours later I wake up and can't shut my brain back down. When I get up in the morning I'm exhausted because I'm only able to sleep a few hours a night and the rest I'm anxious, tossing and turning.

Did anyone have this side effect? Did it go away soon?

SSRI induced insomnia is fairly common. It may, or may not go away. If it doesn't ask your doctor to prescribe 25-50mg of trazodone (Desyrel), a sedating antidepressant often prescribed for SSRI triggered insomnia. It only becomes an antidepressant at 150-225mg plus, at lower doses it acts as an antihistamine so won't interfere with Prozac. Some find the over-the-counter antihistamine Benadryl to be sedating enough, so it might be worth a shot if you can't get a prescription for trazodone immediately.

NOTE: I'm not a doctor, and particularly not yours, so there may be factors I'm unaware of. Therefore all advice is of a general nature and you should consult your doctor before following any of it, especially before changing med doses.

How long have you been on it?

Only two weeks so far.

I took melatonin one night and tried Benadryl another. Both are helping me fall asleep just not stay asleep the full night. The most I'm getting is about 4-5 hrs then wake up fully alert. I have an appointment next week so maybe I can get something prescribed. Thanks guys.
