How often is "normal" to get sick?
« on: March 06, 2014, 02:30:16 PM »
I know that's everyone's version of "normal" is different...but I was wondering how often you guys get sick, especially during the winter months?
I had a tummy bug about 2 weeks ago, I have a cough for the past few days, and now I can feel a sore throat coming on :(
I worry that I'm getting sick "often" because of some underlying illness that I haven't been diagnosed with yet :(

Legit sick, or imagined sick?

Legit sick, I can count on one hand how many times I have had a stomach thing.

I get sinus junk at least 2-4 times a year, with chronic a lot.

Flu with fever, I don't get every year, just sometimes.

That is with me having an autoimmune condition (getting tested for exactly what)  and structural sinus narrowness that gets congested easily.  AND I work with the public and money (dirty stuff with germs)

So sounds like normal stuff to me.   Immune systems can be down due to stress and anxiety too.  So if you are anxious a lot you can get sick a lot.

I rarely get sick.  I get a cold about once every 3 years.  Never had the FLU (I get the shot) and I had a stomach bug last in 1968.  But I worry DAILY that I am getting sick   :(

Everyone is different. Some peoples immune system is stronger than others,
some people are exposed more to sick people and the list goes on. Odds are
you are OK.

I get a cold virus this about 3 times per year. Have it now. Causes a cough, temp and stuffy nose and sinus issues.

The ENT I saw in dec said it is normal for healthy people to get up to 6 colds etc per year. Could actually have maybe been higher.

I hate when I come down with something too as I think 'is there something underlying'. But everyone is different and since my teens I've gotten this at least twice per year and when I get it, it floors me and I'm not well for a good week and then the cough lingers. Always been this way for me.

I get stomach bug about 4 times a year.  I too always think it is something more causing it.

I dont think there are any set boundaries of normality when it comes to being sick . If you have a suspicion of dysfunctional immune system, go to you gp, since if treated , it can work absolutely well... I used to have a classmate, she had problems with her immunity, but it was known, and treated, thus she was actually less sick than me !

I am quite superstitious when I talk about these things, from the time I told my friend...You have fever?! I didn't have it since I was 6years old...You can...I got flue 3 days later  :P

Anyway, for that reason, I am NOT going to tell you, that I get stomach bug/virus once a year probably. I have chronic sinusitis or smth like that (never got it checked) so when I have to much postnasal drip I get sore throat for 3 days and then get stuck with stuffed nose for like 2 weeks. That happens couple of times a year maybe. Had gastroduodenitis in 2011 and I have acid issues sometimes and pain in abdomen, but can't say if it is just anxiety. Had herpes simplex on my back in 2010 and on my stomach in 2013. Well, that's pretty much the list of the diseases I am NOT going to tell you I had and how often.  :winking0008:

Some peoples immune system is stronger than others.

That kind of sums it up right there.

I'll get the flu type illnesses or "really sick" like once a year, this winter I haven't really gotten it at all. I rarely get sick. stuffy nose, sometimes.

I also have a cousin who could pick a penny off a sterilized hospital counter and come down with polio.

Hypo this happened to me last week I was feeling smug that it had been 4 months since I even felt like I had a cold, or sore throat or anything (I've got two small kids who are always sick and coughing and sneezing all over me!!). Anyway I swear next couple of days I started to he a dry throat and next thing I know I've got this flu virus thing. Ive had it since Monday and it's awful!

Thanks for all of the responses.
I'm still dealing with this cough a week since it started. How long do coughs last??
I'm frustrated and worried that I seem to be getting one thing after the other, even though they are just "little" things.
Still dealing with lots of other weird symptoms too.
Need this to end, stat!

Most of the time is sick time for me. I get sick pretty easily but it's never serious. I've got low school attendance though because there's always time off for vomiting, colds, flu, etc, but there's always underlying fears of serious illnesses. Always. That's just something I take as part of my daily routine, have done for a few years
