Can anxiety cause buzzing/ringing in the ears?
« on: March 01, 2014, 08:12:27 PM »
Hey guys recently I've noticed this faint buzzing sound in my ears but i only notice it when its quiet and/or if i lay down, gets worse if i turn my head to the right of left when i do so. today i asked my brother to listen closely and tell me what he heared (didn't tell him what i was hearing), he told me he could hear a faint buzzing/ringing noise but said only if he paid attention to his hearing, could i just be hypersensitive? I also noticed if i force my ears close with my hands the buzzing/ringing sound becomes allot louder.

Things i think that's causing this - Anxiety, Using headphones for 4-5hrs a day, using cotton swabs to clean my ears too much? (maybe)

Hi, I suddenly developed tinnitus (ringing in the ears) back in November. It was in one ear, and occasionally it gets louder for a few seconds, also. Sometimes the other one rings, too.

I went to an ENT specialist and also had an MRI after the tinnitus began, and there was nothing wrong with my ears or hearing, and the MRI came back normal. The doctor said sometimes it just happens, and anxiety can exacerbate it.

Sometimes these things occur with no explanation. It could be from listening to your music for days like you mentioned. I should add that before the tinnitus began, I was vacuuming with a loud vacuum for a while that day, but I'm not sure if it's from that since I still have the tinnitus. I have learned to ignore it and don't even notice it anymore unless I look for it.

I hope this helps!

yes. I get it. Its not the most common of anxiety symptoms, but its far from rare. I wouldnt worry about it. If you have tinnitus and you have anxiety, the anxiety is probably causing it.

YES!

I, myself been having ringing in my ears when i am on a state of anxiety or just really stressed out! Are you also using headphones/earphones while listening to music? Sometimes prolonged listening to music on your headset on a high volume can also cause ringing in the ears so be responsible for that to avoid permanent hearing loss.

Nothing serious, you are fine! I bet 98% of members here in Anxiety zone experienced ringing in ears because we are all anxious.

Cotton swabs definitely don't help, especially if you are pushing them to far in they can slightly damage your ears (nothing serious or to worry about) but when I was using them I ended up scratching the inside which made them ring for a few days! So maybe stop that.
To be honest the more you concentrate on this the louder and more obvious it will seem to you, especially in a quiet room, loud music can also cause the ringing temporarily.
If you had severe ear ringing you would hear it constantly and it would be loud, even then it's usually just due to ear wax!
(I also had this concern a couple of weeks about)
Once I stopped thinking about it, it seemed to go! :) x
