What to do about my shortness of breath
« on: February 22, 2014, 05:36:28 PM »
I've had an echo, which the doctor said was disgustingly perfect. A 30 day holter monitor which didn't record anything, but I continue to have daily shortness of breath. It scares me because it does happen after exercise but also comes when I'm anxious. It doesn't fit the asthma frame because it's usually a feeling in my throat or chest that I'm just not getting enough air in. What could this be? Anxiety? Acid reflux?  Something fatal? It's so scary. Any other tests to get done?

I just want to ask a question.  Does it feel like let's say after coming up stairs that you have to keep sighing deeply?  Do you feel real shaky too?  And to test this "shortness of breath" do something that brings it on, then hold your breath.  If you can hold your breath then it's not shortness of breath, it's anxiety.

Sighing deeply, yes. I yawn chronically. It's an anxious reflex when I feel short of breath. Shaky. No not really. How long should I hold my breath?  That's good insight, I've never tested that but I bet I could definitely hold my breath

Right now I feel somewhat short of breath, not as bad as earlier and could hold my breath for about 23 seconds

(OK I wrote this and then your post came in again - so 23 seconds in a LOT longer than the 7 seconds I suggested!  That is NOT shortness of breath - you did great!)

When I was getting that I'd just hold it about 7 seconds, and then consciously noticed that I COULD breath normally.  That made me realize I wasn't panting which is the sign of being out of breath.  I'd also get real shaky to where I had to sit down.  Sometimes I'd just push through it and it would stop after a while.

I'm sorry to hear that, I doubt it's anything serious, It used to happen to me a lot where I felt like I just couldn't get a full lung of air, it's rather freaky and what not.

Things will turn out. (:
