Pulsitile Tinnitus fears
« on: February 21, 2014, 11:08:58 PM »
Recently I've been having lots of pressure and what I can only describe as a "whoosing" sound in time with my heartbeat in both of my ears and it really has me concerned. It only happens when I'm lying down and it's quite annoying.

I can't seem to find any benign reasons for this to be happening and that worries me even more. I'm certain that I have an AVM, aneurysm or arterial dissection waiting to rupture. The reasoning behind this is that I've been chronically dizzy for almost 2 years, have had chronic neck pain for about the same amount of time and about 10 days ago I had an orgasm induced thunderclap headache. All of which are prodromal symptoms of said aforementioned scary conditions. My CT scan cleared me of any bleeding in the ER when the headache happened but now with the pulsitile tinnitus I'm certain that I'm on the precipice of an impending disaster.

Has anyone had pulsitile tinnitus and it been caused by something totally innocuous or something that while wasn't innocuous, wasn't life threatening, either? I'm trying very hard not to beg my wife to take me to the ER again and have them re-scan my brain but at this point I'm fairly certain I'm in a dangerous place medically and it's only a matter of time and that I need to get to the ER sooner rather than later to catch the impending bleed.

Did you have a cold or flu recently?   Any upper respiratory sickness?  Could be fluid in there and the heartbeat is just echoing.   I also heard someone say once blood pressure issues, but high blood pressure HAS no symptoms (I've had 190's over the teens and had no symptoms!)  So it probably is just fluid or mucus blocked up in there.   If it's in the middle ear it will cause dizziness too and I'm not even sure  doctor could SEE into the middle ear.  (could they??? Hmmm....)

Morning, I just posted something kinda the same as your post.
Do you have any fullness, or popping or crackling in the ears?  I have chronic sinusitis, and I go through horrible bouts with fluid and pulsatile tinnitus. I get it to the point where it sounds like a herd of buffalo running in my head.

You mentioned the ER, have you gone to an ear nose and throat specialist? My suggestion is start there. There are many tests they can do to help you figure out why you have this. I have heard that you can have a heightened awareness to it, once you know it's there. Sometimes you can hear it at night when you are laying down because it is a lot more quiet. You don't have the everyday noises drowning it out.

Try not to diagnose yourself, and don't google it. Make an appointment with an ear nose and throat specialist! :grinning-smiley-003:

Nope, haven't had any colds or the flu for quite some time. I had a cold in September but that was because I was staying in a hotel for my wedding and I ALWAYS catch a cold when I stay in a hotel for more than a night, no clue why.  So, I don't think it's anything like that. I've had sinusitis before and it was much different from what I've been experiencing. It's always been pain and pressure under my eyes and a stuffy nose but I haven't felt that way for years.

My ears don't really pop or crack but man, when this is going on do they feel full.

Going to a ENT isn't an option as there are no providers in my area that accept Medicaid and to top it all off, my state is nearing a shutdown because of an inability to come to a decision about Medicaid expansion and so my insurance it about to become even more worthless than it already is  :(

You said it only happens when laying down.  I should have said that I get that and haven't had any colds in over a year either!   It can be REALLY annoying!  I try changing positions or putting the pillow behind my ear in such a way that the ear doesn't come in contact with the bed or pillow (figuring it wouldn't echo up through the pillow or mattress) but even that doesn't help.  (I will put the TV on and then I'm distracted) when I wake up in the middle of the night I don't hear it anymore (or maybe I'm not thinking about it and am too sleepy to have it bother me?)
Except mine don't feel full.  But maybe you have it worse than I do.  Try putting some drops of hydrogen peroxide in your ear and let it sizzle.  I do that when I'm dizzy.
I never went to a doctor for it so can't tell you exactly what causes it, but I CAN tell you it's been happening for years and years and years and I am just fine.
