Tonsillitis? Tonsil Stones? What can it be!
« on: February 17, 2014, 10:54:13 PM »
So I have this yellowish/white spot on the bottom of my right tonsil. It started out being itchy (almost as if I was suffering from my usual seasonal allergies) and I felt like I had to keep clearing my throat… which prompted me to take a picture of my tonsils… Damn camera phones! It looks like a tonsil stone except it almost seems like its under my skin. Its smaller than a pea. I went to the local minute clinic where I had a rapid strep test done, and turns out I have strep throat. I also have anxiety --- which doesn't help! I started antibiotics on Thursday, but the yellow dot on my tonsil is still there and still looks the same. Should I be worried?   ::)

I get tonsil stones all the time. I can use my finger and pop them out - try it!  :sick0002:  Good luck!

Do they ever look like they're under your skin? It almost looks like its embedded in there… sorry for being graphic!

THAT my friend sounds like a mucus retention cyst.  Very common.   I had one I noticed in July and it spontaneously drained in December.  Does it look perfectly round (or oval) and smooth?  Tonsil stones are more rough looking, not smooth and not under the skin.

Hmm… I've never heard of that… Do you have to have it drained or is this something that will go away on it's own?

I tried googling and came up with a bunch of results… I'm thinking maybe because I have strep throat it could definitely be part of the infection. I just hope its nothing SERIOUS.

Is it real smooth, raised and round or oval?  NOT serious at all.  Mine went away on it's own.  The only time you'd have to have it drained is if it got so big it would start causing you distress.   My tonsil did get infected, after antibiotics the infection went away but the cyst didn't.  When I went to the doctor for the infection I asked him if I had a mucus retention cyst there, he just said, "Yea, a little one".  The cyst isn't an infection in an of itself.  I noticed it in July, in October my tonsil got infected (infection cleared up quickly with Z Pack) and in December the cyst went away.  If it's a mucus retention cyst that has nothing to do with strep throat.  It's usually caused post nasal drip OR it can be caused by acid reflux.

Yes, this is exactly what my tonsil stones are like. I can massage them out with my finger. They aren't serious, I've been getting them for as long as I can remember. My ENT said they could remove my tonsils - but that surgery scares me!
