Fibro and symptom confusion
« on: February 13, 2014, 11:32:32 AM »
Fibromyalgia can cause many types of pain and soreness, which has proven to be true for me. I've been in and out of the doctor's office constantly since coming down with fibro 11 years ago.

I once read that people with fibro need to be careful, because we can get so accustomed to strange, new kinds of pain that we eventually come to ignore them--which is bad news if we come down with a condition other than fibro. But since I read that, I've been painfully aware of every new or unusual pain I feel.

For instance, I have severe tenderness whenever I touch two ribs, the same one on each side, reaching from under my arms down towards the sternum. I think. Anyway, I also have shooting pains under both arms, extra tenderness in the muscles leading from the right underarm to the chest... So I'm thinking: breast cancer, or a severe lymph node problem...

I also have ongoing achiness and stabbing pains in my right hip/upper leg/lower back/pelvis. So I'm thinking: bone cancer, or a nearby cancer (colon? ovarian?) that has spread...

I've had health anxiety so long already, and cancer phobia for a year or so... And it doesn't help that I hear so many stories in the news about strangers--younger people (under 50) diagnosed with cancer, or from friends and co-workers about so-and-so who was just diagnosed, and so on.

Is anyone else in the same boat as me? Health anxiety is exhausting, especially when combined with pain from fibro, which often occurs along with chronic fatigue. Talk about going in circles.  :(

Hi Bulan,

Yes , wow yes!! Fibro is awful.. the pain can be so intense and hurt all over and the tender spots you feel like you might have bruised yourself.. I am always rubbing on my sore spots and you are right about the anxiety that we have we never know because anxiety causes so many body symptoms when it also flares up or a panic attack happens..
I seen several doctors and pain specialist basically there isn't a lot we can do and the one thing we can not do is OVER DO..The more strenuous exercises we do the more we will hurt and feel miserable so water therapy is one of the best for Fibro and mild exercises..
I know some who take meds but those meds aren't always so good so I opted out on taking them.. Fibro is also another illness not taken serious by many people and including doctors..
Fibro flares are not fun either I am to cold and it causes me to hurt or if I get to Hot I am miserable..

It is hard to tell what is really going on so yes it is best to always get tested and checked by a doctor for other things..
I so wish this was taken more serious and treated better.

I hurt from head to toes some days.. but upper body hurts the most and then in the back of my legs... but I also have other health conditions.

Good Luck and Praying for you.. hope that is okay.

Thank you for sharing your story, PinkIcePrincess!

It's reassuring to hear other experiences with fibro, because I need the reminder that I'm not the only one with sometimes intense and very localized pain.

I'm feeling quite uncertain this morning. I woke up when the baby did, and the pain has kept me awake since.

Below is my mystery... if anyone has had something similar, please let me know!

1) Dec. 28 (2013) sudden pain erupts in:
- pelvis (across the front)
- lower back (just to the right of the spine)
- right hip
- right groin
- right upper leg

Tests are ordered (blood, urine, ultrasound)
- everything comes back negative, except the ultrasound which shows a simple cyst on the left ovary.
- doctor is not worried

2) Jan. 18 (2014) pain worsens in:
- right hip
- lower back (just to the right of the spine)
- both are made more painful by pressing on the areas

Doctor orders six weeks of physiotherapy.

Meanwhile...

3) Pain erupts under right arm; there is no discernible lump, but there is aching, stabbing pain, and it is much worse with applied pressure.

Several days later, underarm pain subsides.

4) Feb. 18, pain by lower spine has subsided, but erupts in:
- right hip: stabbing, aching, shooting pains; pain made worse with applied pressure--it burns when pressed.
- right groin
- right upper leg
- right side, above the hip
- lower back, above the hip

There is pain with and without movement. Weightbearing doesn't seem to have an impact.

5) Feb. 20 I visit my doctor to request follow-up tests, given physio hasn't solved the pain in my hip and groin.
- he had originally mentioned the option of an X-ray
- should I ask for a CT scan? Another ultrasound? An MRI?

Does anyone have insight on these symptoms?

My biggest fear is the big 'C', but I realize it could also be another ovarian cyst, symptoms of fibro, a hernia, or even just a result of sleeping on my right side too much...

Please share your insight or experience. Thank you!

I know it's been a while since you posted this, but I've had fibro for 17 years, and lately I've been alternating between the Fibro boards and the Hypochondriac boards because of sore aching ribs on my left side (which in my addled brain I convinced myself it's pancreatic cancer or bone cancer). I keep a journal, and I've had this same symptoms for 11 months (it'll be a year in June 2014).  I'm thinking that if I had PC that was large enough to cause pain, I'd be terribly ill by now.  Seeing that you also experience rib pain (for no apparent reason) made me feel a lot better (sorry that it's at your expense).  Wishing you the best <3
