ALS - can't function with the fear
« on: February 09, 2014, 07:34:36 PM »
Warning - this contains early symptoms that I got from one of the ALS forums.  Don't read if it will scare you.

I never used to be afraid of ALS but now I am convinced beyone a shadow of a doubt that this is what I have.  I googled early symptoms and it brought me to an ALS forum where people listed their early symptoms.  This is what I found -

scars from minor cuts take forever to heal - yes, I have this
knuckles in hand lock up - my fingers are very stiff
very dry skin - yes, I have this
losing dexterity in hands - yes, I have this
having problems holding plates - yes, I have this
slurred speech - yes, I have this, one of my worst symptoms
cramping in legs - yes, I have this, but not frequently
could not stand on tip toes - I do not have this
can't move foot up or down - I do not have this
gradual decline in physical performance - yes, I have this
wakening unexpectedly feeling as if choking - yes, I have this
periodic bouts of excessive phlegm in back of throat - yes I have this
choking eisodees with saliva going down throat  - yes, I have this
balance problems - yes, I have this
sensitivity to sitting on hard surface - yes, I have this

In addition to having most of the above I also have a problem with my toes, those on my right foot have been feeling funny lately, kind of swollen (hard to describe).  The other night two of them were totally paralyzed and numb.  When I bent the toes, these two did not move at all.  It looked and felt very freaky.  They are okay now, I can move them but they still feel very funny, much more than they did before the paralysis.

With my slurred speech and throat/choking problems (I also have a terrible time swallowing) it appears I probably have the bulbar (sp?) form of this which I guess is the worst.

If anyone has been able to read this far have you ever had these symptoms and been found to NOT have ALS?  I am so distraught and depressed over this I can barely function and I am way too afraid to go to the doctor.  Can you offer me any hope?

(please don't tell my it is all from anxiety.  Anxiety does not cause toe paralysis.)

Hypo and Scaredof - I am afaid that both of you think I have this.

No, I have not seen a neurologist.  I am too afraid.

My oldest symptom is probably the phlegm in the back of the throat.  I have had that for at least 4-5 years.  The others are newer, such as the toe problem.  I first noticed them feeling funny about a month ago.  And the choking thing is kind of new also.

You really should see a neurologist. It's less about confirming a diagnosis and more about helping you feel better.
There could be many reasons for your symptoms. Have other people confirmed you are slurring your words?

I was probably aware of most of them 6 months or more except for the choking feeling and the toe problems.  I am more aware of them lately probably because they are getting worse.   In fact I posted a few months about my ALS fears maybe 6 months ago but then for some reason I stopped worrying about it.  Now the fear is back worse than ever.  I think it is the toe thing that has me more afraid than anything else and this is what got me started again.

You still didn't say how old are you.

Anyway, it doesn't sound at all like ALS. You should go to neurologist just to check if it's not something else. In my opinion it is mostly anxiety with something physical like pinched nerve which caused toe issues.
