Has anyone tried Vitamin D3 for seasonal Anxiety?
« on: February 09, 2014, 04:36:42 AM »

I'm going to get some tomorrow.  I have a friend who takes vitamin D for SAD.  Anyone else
have good experiences with it?  I'm going to try the 5000 UI dose.

Well, I can't say I have noticed it helping... I take 4000 IU... but I have a few people that say that it does help. So give it a try. Plus it is supposed to be good for you for all kinds of other reasons.

Nann, how long have you been taking 4000 iu of vitamin d3?

The pharmacist advised me to take no more than 2000 iu.  Has to do with how the body can break down the vitamin.
I'm starting today Feb. 9 and will take one daily for two weeks and evaluate.

I have been taking it since 2009.

It is about the blood level NOT how much you take.  You should get your blood level tested after taking it to determine how it works for you. Every single person will have unique blood level results.  Current recommendations are 800 IU per day but that amount has been roundly criticized as being too low.

The sweet spot for blood level is from 35 ng per mil to 60 ng per mil.  Mine stays around 40 to 45 ng per mil with 4000 IU per day.

Last year I lost some weight and started taking 1000 IU feeling that I might need less (fat can trap vitamin d). I was immediately sick 3 times in a row... when I am generally not sick in the winter. I got my blood level taken and it was 19 ng per ml. (too low) this winter, zero head colds.  I do not necessarily notice it helping with anxiety but maybe I am just not tuned into it.

I took 3000iu over the summer and felt fantastic, idk what it did to my nerves but it like literally blocked my anxiety. My body felt amazing too. I have a deficiency but still it was like night and day for me. I even tried to like make myself nervous and I couldn't.

My blood test shows low Vitamin D.  Doctor recommended 4000 IU/day spread over 4 doses of 1000 IU each.  I've been doing this for years.  Doctor said if you take too much at once the body can't absorb it all and it just gets pooped out.  By spreading the dosage throughout the day your body absorbs it better and you have a more constant blood level.  Just don't take one 2000 IU or 5000 IU pill and expect to get the same benefit as if you spread that dosage out over the day.

i don't know about anxiety, but low vit D levels can cause depression like symptoms. SAD is, for most people (most with a disclaimer) depression and irritability. i have mine tested by my physician, and i take 20000 iu's once per month just to get it to a semi normal range. i would be careful with over the counter versions when a simple blood test can determine if you are in fact deficient.
