how long for antibiotics to work
« on: February 07, 2014, 11:57:31 PM »
Well I've been on antibiotics for a little over 24 hrs for my ear pain. So far no improvement. Hopefully I will see some relief soon. Anybody know how long it takes for antibiotics to start working?

Yes, I agree with the above post. I think the "24 hr" rule is for contagious. I believe you're not contagious after 24 hrs on antibiotics, but to actually feel relief for yourself, it takes a few days.

It also depends on what kind they gave you. If you're allergic to the one that would work the fastest, then you are given one that won't make you ill!

Ear infections can take a good 3 -4 days to start to feel better, depending on lots of stuff.  You need to unclog, too! Did they tell you to take a decongestant?  AVOID Benadryl type stuff. That dries it up and makes it thicker so longer to heal!

Can take up to three days to start working. Eat lots of yogurt and take probiotics.

+1

There is no need to anxiously wait for antibiotics to work. You'll be much better in couple of days.

The Claritin is an antihistamine and dries you up like a Benadryl.   You can call your pharmacist and ask to verify, but once my primary told me to NEVER take Benadryl again, I never ever had another ear infection!  I'd had them my whole life and it's been over 10 years now.

I had one ear infection that was so bad that it took a month of antibiotics to clear it up. It was a deep inner ear infection, tho, and as it healed, the ear drum burst and drained a chunky type discharge that was brown and looked like cottage cheese. The smell was like awful dog poop!  It was a combo of blood and pus.  I was so sick I couldn't get off the sofa for days.  I'd waited WAY too long to go for treatment because of no money or insurance.

Sudaphed (behind the counter with NO PE in it) works wonders for opening up my ears and sinuses.  You have to take it every 4 to 6 hours and it takes a day or so to break the stuff free. I actually can feel the dried junk break loose and then have almost instant relief!

Best of luck!
Diane
