another new puppy related anxiety
« on: February 06, 2014, 08:51:14 AM »
i knew this was going to happen. i am getting all kinds of anxiety from getting a dog.  here is the latest one...

rabies.
she is a puppy and doesn't have rabies, however she will be getting a rabies vaccine soon.  i am frightened that when she gets the shot, it may be a live virus type of vaccine and that i could possibly get the virus from her when she licks, bites, breathes on me.

i have an auto-immune disorder and this makes me even more scared.

does anyone know if the rabies vaccine could do this?

No way a rabies vaccine could infect the dog with rabies to the point where it will be infectious to you! I've never heard of anything like that and I actually studied rabies because I was afraid of getting it lol.

what if it doesn't affect her but it does me because of my blood disorder? is that possible

for example, my family can't get the nasal flu vaccine because it's a live virus and i can't be around that.

I think for extra safety you should talk to an immunologist about your particular condition.
From what I know and what I have read, vaccination can CAUSE an autoimmune disease but I doubt an autoimmune disease will make you catch rabies from a vaccinated pet. Just to be extra sure, talk to a doctor.

No, it doesn't contain live virus. Just inactivated virus to stimulate the immune response. It can't and doesn't cause any infection.

ok i think that means i would be ok. right?

i get the flu vaccine myself, and other  ones too, like pneumonia and tetnus, etc. so as long as it is not live  i should be good.  i think.
damn, i thought i was gonna be able to get rid of the puppy! ;)

I'm pretty sure you will be OK.

But do ask your veterinarian anyway whether they use inactivated or a modified live vaccine. Depending on your country, different legislation may apply. If it's inactivated then you need not worry at all.

Anyway, just remember that there are many people out there that have pets and some of them probably have autoimmune diseases too. If there were ANY concern at all about what you mentioned, you would have heard about it. I don't think there was ever a case of that happening, especially not with the newer generation vaccines.

Hi Reece,

My whole family has two or three auto immune diseases. From Hashimoto's to liver disorders and have had many pets, dogs and cats vaccinated, and no indication whatsoever to affect us. Our pets have improved our quality of life and that is a key to control any auto immune flare.

I really think you will be ok with your puppy's rabies shot. And if you are very concerned, you could seek an immunologist's opinion.

Best of luck!
