2 cm+ lymph node in neck
« on: February 04, 2014, 02:14:25 PM »
I've had this lymph node since childhood. Its probably been there since I was 6 or 7, and I have had multiple docs feel it over the years and none of them have expressed concern over it. I had a lot of ear and strep throat infections as a kid, so I was wondering if this could just be a scarred node. I have a traditionally buck-shot shaped node under my jaw that is the size of a pea as well. I'm just worried about this big one. Its firm, painless, but does move around quite a bit. I also have enlarged nodes behind my ear and on the back of my head that I have had since childhood as well.

Bottom line is, are any of these at all dangerous? None of them hurt, but pretty much all of them have been present for about as long as I can remember.

I have 2 or 3 pea sized nodes under my jaw that have been there for awhile. they are hard and don't move. I have a long history of sinus and throat infections and I've had multiple doctors feel them, none which are concerned. As for the lymph node in your neck, If it has been there that long and doctors have never been concerned about it, then I'm pretty positive it's fine

How old are you now? I assume in your teens or twenties. If that is the case, and you've had this lymph node for this long with out it growing it's not anything serious like I assume you are thinking. it would be bigger then a baseball by now probably if it was, they are probably just scarred. Strep is notorious for making lymph nodes permanently enlarged. I have a similar node but its about 1.5 cm long and .5 wide and a pea size one on the other side of it, I recently found it which put me in a huge scare for about a month but then I remembered when I was little i got a terrible case of laryngitis which would account for the location of my two lymph nodes.

I'm currently 20 years old. I've had more strep throat infections than I can count on two hands. And I guess your right, if I had lymphoma for this long, even the follicular type, it would surely be much bigger after almost 15 years.

I have the same exact thing. My doctor sent me to a dr where he did an ultrasound / biopsy which turned out non cancerous. I would just get it checked by a specialist :) the precedure is fairly easy

I have a large lymph node behind my right ear as well. It has been there since my childhood I guess. An ENT specialist inspected it and it was nothing according to him. I am still scared sometimes that it might be something else though, but my fear isn't as bad as before.

Have you had it checked out by a doctor recently?

I am not saying that it is something bad given the circumstances. I am confident that it is nothing serious since you've had it since you were young. Seriously, if it were something bad, you'd probably feel really sick right now.

I freaked and saw two docs this week (primary care clinic) for a pea sized lump in front of my ear that I've had as long as I can remember.  I had several ear infections a year for the first 50 plus years of my life.  Pea sized, symmetrical, moves easily, buckshot....  Both docs told me 'shotty nodes' or scarred from so many infections, etc. In fact, my favorite doc said there's a smaller one in front of that one but deeper and that shotty nodes generally will be all of the nodes in that group sort of clustered together.  Nothing to worry about.

About the one in your neck and back of your head. The one in your neck was never pea sized. Those were always bigger even before an infection.  On the back of your scalp, my son had seborrhea dermatitis (bad dandruff) as a pre teen.  His nodes back of his head were as big as marbles. Derm said they'll go down when condition is cleared up but that we'll always be able to feel those. He said newborns have nodes that are virtually nothing until the first 'use' or infection and then they never return to that 'nothing' size again.

I wish we could all accept what we're told without second guessing.  My mother will have heart tests which are perfect, drive out of the doc's parking lot and think, 'Okay, now THAT was a heart attack at that stop sign!'
