Question about losing weight
« on: February 04, 2014, 06:46:38 AM »
I am fairly slim and have a bad habit of not eating when I'm stressed or worrying about something.

There have been quite a few things in the past two weeks (especially) for me to worry about which means i havent been eating as well as i normally do and I have also had a kidney infection that I am still on antibiotics for.

My question is this.

Does anyone know how much weight a person has to lose in a short period of time before they should be seeing a doctor?

Personally I wouldn't see a doctor unless you were getting physically ill from not eating right.   For instance in 2002 I lost 25 pounds in a month and if I were say 200 pounds that wouldn't be a problem, but I was 137 and dropped to 111 (I'm 5'6"), because of not being able to eat (I'd be hungry, but after taking 2 bites I couldn't even swallow without feeling like I was going to gag) - it all stemmed from worrying about a weird thing with my eye.  My stomach then got upset ALL the time, very nauseated all day long and I COULDN'T eat (the not eating CAUSED the stomach to get upset like that - gas, acid, etc).  THAT is when I went to see a doctor.    So it all depends on your starting weight and percentage of weight being lost.  Like I said 25 pounds was almost 20% of my body weight lost in a month, that is not healthy.   If you are 200 pounds and lost 10 pounds in a month you are fine, if you lost 10 in a week, not good.

Sunlover- was the cause of your symptoms truly just anxiety? I am going through the same thing and convinced it is pancreatic cancer?!! How long did these symptoms persist mine have been a bit over a month now and I am overwhelmed with worry! I agree though gomu- you shouldn't be worried stress and antibiotics really cause you to lose your appetite, and a few pounds is nothing.

First off, congrats on spelling "losing" right.  I hate it when people say loosing.  ;)

I agree with the other poster though, that is the best answer.

Thanks guys.

I'm 5'9' and was 163pounds I weighed myself yesterday and I was surprised to see I am at 155.

This morning I weighed myself again and I've lost another 3.5 ounces since yesterday despite feeling like I've been eating much more properly the past three days...

Does that sound ok??

Yes.  In July of 2002 I had a really FUNKY thing happen with my vision.   The eyedoctor had no idea what it was, he didn't SEE anything at all and his, "I never heard of that" really made my day :(
I freaked out so bad that I couldn't eat, I was getting lumps in my throat so bad (globus) but I was thinking it was lumps of puke that would appear there and get stuck (my other fear is throwing up!) so then I had 2 things to freak out over.  I'd actually be really hungry, sit down with a big burger and potatoes etc, take 2 bites out of the burger and felt like I was going to gag, I couldn't eat.  It got so I'd eat a bite of toast for breakfast, and maybe 2 bites of chicken around lunch and that was IT.  After about 3 weeks I started getting so nauseous I'd be laying in bed because if I moved I'd actually gag - it was HORRIBLE!!  I finally went to a local clinic, he did a blood and urine test and told me that it showed I was actually "starving" myself and told me to suck on ice pops and get some gatorade.  He told me I did that ALL to myself!   After I did what he said in one day I was able to eat a whole chicken leg, then the more I was able to eat the better I became.  It was all from worry about my eye!  I was finally pretty normal by Christmas.  I was able to eat a pretty normal Christmas dinner.  All pure anxiety and I vowed never to let that happen again!

You answered this one yourself really, not eating right=weight loss or gain, depending on if you overeat, or in your case, undereat, causing weight loss. You could ask your doctor to pass you on to a dietician (diet specialist) who will help you plan out a healthy eating regimen to follow each day to maintain a healthy weight.

Thanks sun lover- this sounds a lot like what I am going through but I also have heartburn and gas/belching. I have been to a GI doc and he believes it is stress related as well and my labs looks normal besides gastritis. I just love food so much I never expected this to happen!

Weight fluctuates on a daily basis.  I weigh myself often because I refuse to go above 133 pounds, one morning I'll be 133.5 and be upset then the very next day it will read 131.0.  I didn't LOSE 2 and a half pounds, it's just the fluctuation.   And 3.5 ounces my scale wouldn't even register as it records only in half pounds.  When you weigh daily you'll see fluctuations.
Oh, and another thing, if you had been eating less and losing weight, you don't immediately start gaining it back when you are eating more.  When I had my stupid problem and then started eating almost normal I dropped one more pound, then I stayed there for a few weeks before my eating caught up with me.  That's how it works.  So if you have only been eating normal for 3 days it will take a while.  It's like a car crashing into a brick wall at 60mph, the car may have stopped, but the people inside still fly forward at 60mph until THEY catch up and crash into the wall too.

I should have mentioned I had heartburn too!  I even forgot about that until you mentioned it - I was put on Prevacid for a while!

Thanks for the replies guys

I just spoke with my doc on the phone and she said to stop the antibiotics and see if my weight stabilises. If I keep losing weight she wants to investigate a thyroid problem

I don't know if I made it clear to her just HOW stressed I've been.

I really hope that's all it is. This year has been tough so far on the stress/anxiety front...

Don't weigh your self more than once a day, and weigh your self at around the same time, your weight fluctuates through out the day, I've learned this through trying to lose weight. I typically weigh myself once every two week's to make sure I'm not gaining weight, but for you I would only weigh your self once a month, For awhile i started losing weight for no reason I started weighing myself everyday, I finally stopped and then when I weighed my self a few weeks later I had put the weight back on.

I have also been struggling with weight loss and I am really freaking myself out right now. Definitely the worst thing I have ever googled out of all of the symptoms I've ever had. I literally read something that said "weight loss is cancer until proven otherwise." I am literally in a full blown panic right now. I noticed today that the scale was another couple pounds lower today and I actually have been doing a better job with eating he past few days. This has to be more than anxiety.

Ah Taurus... I really wish you hadn't posted that quote...

Partially because I refuse to google this.

My doctor on the phone said 'if it keeps dropping we will do a blood test to check for a thyroid problem. Don't worry about anything yet'

But it feels like the weight loss has been really sudden so of course  trying to ignore the subconscious part of my brain screaming CANCER at me. :(

Logically I know I havnt been eating as much and have had no appetite. But my ha part of me says. You've been stressed before and you've never lost weight over it...

It's so ridiculous. If it was less I wouldn't worry but it's like 3.5 kg in a couple weeks.

Hi Gomubukai,

Let me tell you that you are not alone in this.

If you follow my previous topics back in November to December, you can see that I was MADLY obsessed with my weight loss.

Believe it or not, I am usually the person who gains weight a lot even if I just sit around!

The funny thing is that I actually started to lose weight back in August and then I got a bad stomach flu that made me eat less for about a month. I also had a diabetes scare back in September so I had to reduce my sugar intake (fortunately, blood sugar test was normal).

The thing that really really really scared me was the fact that people kept telling me "Wow, you lost weight!" and as I look back at the things that I did, I believe they were not enough for people to notice how much weight I lost. Like I said, I usually gain weight by just sitting around and doing nothing. Never have I lost weight this fast.

Get this: Back in August 2013, I weighed around 201 lbs. In September, I dropped to 190 lbs. Then towards December, I dropped to 182 lbs. The weight lost just kept coming and coming.

I was at the point when I had to decline to go to Christmas parties and reunions because I was terrified to meet people thinking that they would say that I lost weight. I am a photographer during my free time and you know what, because of this weight loss scare, I was terrified to have my photos taken even in groups because I would compare the photo with my previous photos and see how much I lost weight. That's how bad it was.

And you know how the holidays make us fat right? Over the holidays, I still get people commenting on my weight loss. You can just imagine how ridiculously depressed I was.

To make it even worse, I felt really weak and tired during the last week of December towards the new year. So much for enjoying the holidays! I got a CBC with differential count and it came back perfect. The doctor was so happy yet I was still not assured.

Well, to make things short: It's February right now and I gained weight back to 190 lbs. I still anticipate people to tell me that I lost weight and honestly, it still scares me. I still obsess over my photos sometimes, but the main scare is not as bad as before.

Well, I guess the overeating has now opened up to a new GI symptom which is gas and tingling in the tummy. You can just imagine how HA is driving me nuts.

If you're feeling fine in general, then I don't think you have to worry.
