Funky looking moles in kids
« on: February 03, 2014, 07:47:31 AM »
My almost 12 year old son has a funky looking mole on the back his neck, and yesterday I noticed that it had an area of darker coloring in it.  I'm not sure if it's always had that coloring or not.  I only noticed yesterday because the area around it was  a bit red from a scratch and I was looking closely.  I will take him to get it checked out, but I'm trying not to freak out about it.    Moles can look terrible and weird, but still be nothing, right?  The odds of melanoma in a kids are really low, right?  I haven't googled yet and trying to keep it that way....

My daughter when she was young had some similar issues and she was fine. I would just get them
checked out by a dermatologist.

Thanks, Marc.  Were your daughter's moles dysplastic or just totally normal moles that looked weird?  Did the derm remove them?

We have an appointment tomorrow morning.

My 13 year old daughter has lots of moles so I take her yearly for a skin check.  She tends to get moles that are oval in shape and several of them have a small bit of darker pigment in the center.  The dr. says that they are normal for her but I keep an eye on them.  I find it best to take a picture of the ones that cause you concern so you can better track any changes.

I would get it checked out from a dermatologist but I bet that it is fine.

Moles can come in all shapes, sizes and colours, if you have a mole you are used to and it does not change, get it checked and it will be fine, if you notice a change in a mole, get it checked. Skin cancer is one of the most easy to cure cancers there could ever be apart from melanoma which is rare. Most skin cancers can be removed either using surgery or a chemotherapy cream. Just get the mole checked out by the doctor :)
