Depakote ER to help with Anxiety?
« on: January 31, 2014, 08:22:24 PM »
I recently went to the Pdoc and he has put me on Depakote ER 250mg. Has anyone taken this for issues with anxiety? Also does it have a fast effect or will it take time once I am on a steady does to see results?

Depakote (divalproex) is an anti seizure med also used as a mood stabilizer in bipolar depression. It may also have anti anxiety properties.

Is this in addition to Zoloft or to replace it?

This was added as an addition to the Zoloft 100mg, but it did replace my Buspar. My doctor felt that the Buspar might be ineffective with the severity of my anxiety. My doctor felt I should give the zoloft more time to see how I react tony current dose.

I would have gone with increasing Zoloft to 150mg, but the Depakote is likely to give faster results. Just be aware that it may trigger weight increases so watch what you eat. Exercise will help, not only with the weight, but also the anxiety.

The weight was something my doctor did warn me about. I already have been watching what I eat and find myself  exercising  more. I just am a little weary of it not doing much, and me having to wait another 3 weeks just to explain that I manage to find out another med that is good for getting side effects.
And thanks for the response.
