sleep pattern is all messed up
« on: January 28, 2014, 05:31:42 AM »
My job is sucking the life out of me and I hate it. Since I have to work, I need help on how to deal. The problem is my hours are disrupting my sleep cycle, so when I start to get back on track and feeling good on the weekend, all my hard "sleep work" is done by monday leaving me feeling tired, sore tense muscles, anxious, irritable, joint pains... you know, all the stuff that happens to your body when your sleep is interrupted. So here is my problem. I think my circadian rhythm is super messed up. It's like I am on a different time zone from the rest of the world. I work 8-5 monday thru friday. My pattern is I wake up at 4:30 every day even on weekends and I can't go back to sleep so I just get up. Same thing happens on the weekends, except I get up, go downstairs, clean the house, then i can go back to bed around 7:30 am and sleep until 9 am so then i can stay up until 9 or 10 saturday night, so then sunday i wake up at like 7 am sunday... but then monday work ruins me and its back to waking early. Also, during the work week, I struggle to stay awake past 6:30 pm. Last night I forced myself to the gym and i actually stayed up until midnight, which was great, but then i still woke up at 4:30 am this morning... so it doesnt matter what time i go to bed at night, i still wake up at 4:30. It used to be 3 am for a long time, that really sucked, so at least 4:30 is better but still that is too early. I don't even have to leave for work until 7:30 am. So how can i sleep until 6 am naturally, even on weekends? This has been going on for over a year now. I feel like my natural pattern is to go to bed at 7 pm, wake up at 4:30 am... that is my cycle, but no one else is on this cycle which is ruining my social life! I get jealous when I have of other people talking about stuff they do after work and it makes me mad at myself that I can't stay awake to also do stuff, like, I can't even drive when the sleepiness hits, and if I force myself to stay awake I get headaches, eyes keep rolling around, keep nodding off and drooling (right in the middle of talking or fall asleep while sitting or on the computer or my phone)... it's embarrassing. HELP! I need advice

What would happen if you didn't bother getting out of bed at 4.30AM? In other words stay in bed. By getting out of bed it is a bit like giving into it. I am awake I must get out of bed. I wake at 3AM a lot of the time. I stay in bed. No matter what I won't get out of my bed. I have taken to fallen back asleep again by now. Once we leave the bed we all but saying ' end of sleep '. I would simply try and stay in bed. The first week or two you may not fall back asleep. Just accept that. Don't get angry or frustrated at yourself. Think of it as a time to do some relaxation exercises. Whilst still in bed. Eyes closed. So at least you are staying relaxed. In time you may find yourself drifting back off to sleep. I know it can drive you crazy to wake up and not be able to fall asleep again. Frustration is what can keep us awake. Just relax it up. In time things should right themselves.

This is yet another disorder I can add to my collection. Asleep by 8 pm up by 4 or 4:30 am. Some would label this a disorder. I actually don't. It suits me just fine. Could be the same for you. The key is to like the morning hours. Like being with yourself.

Could be a spoiler for socializing but maybe your own company is better than any others. We are freed as captives of the world of entertainment. We can exercise, meditate, get ready for the day, read, think, write, enjoy a leisurely breakfast. Perhaps we were birds in another life. In with the birds, up with them.

I actually just saw a sleep specialist and it's advanced sleep phase disorder so I have to use a light box at 5:30 for 20 minutes for 2-3 weeks and gradually keep moving the times back to adjust my body core temp and melatonin cycle. So I am about 3 hrs off from the rest of the world. I actually have a light box already so can't wait to see what happens! I used to use it during the day and I found out for me that's bad, I need to use it in the evening so I can get back on track with the rest of the world. Light boxes are $300 or more
