My anxiety isn't extremely severe right now but due to extra stress in school it has been much worse the last few weeks. I feel that if I had something to take it would help me focus because half of my anxiety right now comes from the mental blocks I experience when studying due to my GAD. Am I a candidate for some sort of medication that could be taken sporadically when I need it in low doses or is it not worth it. I just feel that it would help me get over this last bout I've been in and if I relieved my stress for a few days and got a good test mark I'd be fine again.

It all depends on your doctor and your situation.  Some don't really like to prescribe benzo's.  Perhaps you could ask for just a few to tide you over during a stressful time?
Mine has no problem giving me xanax, but he's been my GP for 10 years and knows me very well.
My psychiatrist, who I just started seeing, gives me just enough in case I need it a couple days a week until my next visit.    Like this last visit, I was not going to see him for a month.  He asked me how many times a week I need it.  I said like 3...So he gives me a script for 15 pills!!!
3 times a week x 4 weeks = 12 pills, plus 3 more for good measure???  LOL  I guess once he knows me well and knows that I am not a pill seeker or a drug abuser, he'll be a little more liberal with me.
Jeez at least I hope so.....

You should see a doctor and ask what they think.  If you don't like it, get a second opinion.  However, don't just think you need these things to get by.  The Xanax will make you pass out more than likely.  It slows you way down and you won't worry about your test.  But it is also severely controlled.  So be careful!

Well I'm probably so driven I wouldn't worry about not studying under any circumstances :) but maybe they're not the right thing in my situation. I still might approach my doctor as she knows I'm not a person who would abuse medication, I would only use it in my best interest. For now though I think I'll try to keep going without them- I just wish I didn't get brain fog because that is the most distracting symptom of my anxiety and makes it the most difficult to study.

My Xanax is only 0.5mg and sometimes I only need 1/2 a tablet. So maybe that is a possibility for you....it sounds like you only need an extremely low dose, and only when needed, certainly not daily....

No not daily which is good because I wouldn't be as dependent on it.
