Help! Petrified. Rabies. Bats. Sore throat :(
« on: January 24, 2014, 04:35:03 PM »
Four weeks ago I had what were probably bug bites on my waist. Only I convinced myself they were bat bites. Even though we've never had bats in our house, I never saw one, and 4 people who have searched my attic found no evidence of bats.

I got it in my head that a bat snuck in, bit me on my waist while I was sleeping, and then snuck out.

I was actually starting to let go of the fear this week AND THEN I got sick with a sore throat today :(

My son just got over a cold, so logic tells me I'm getting what he had. But my FEAR tells me I'm getting rabies.

Help walk me through this!

Wouldn't a bat biting me under the covers wake me up?
Wouldn't there be evidence in the attic if my house has bats?

  • There is no way a bat could have snuck under your covers.
  • If one had, you would haven waken up way before it bit you because it would not have been easy to do that. Bats are not sneaky.
  • Had neither of those occurred, you would have definitely woken up if a bat actually bit you unless you were in a temporary coma (which you weren't).
Bats have really poor eyesight. They can't scoot around your bedroom and climb under your blankets and bite you. Not to mention, indoors and loose in a home, they panic. I lived in a home that had bats. There were bats, no doubt about it. They lived in the attic, and they would get into the house at least once or twice a month. They fly frantically, swooping around, freaking out because they're used to the outdoors. I've hidden under my blankets from a bat that flew around my room because they're not gonna be able to get under there.

It was a bug. Doesn't it just make more sense to be a bug? A bug can crawl around undetected. A bug can get under blankets easily. A bug could bite you and not wake you up. It was a bug.

By the way, this might be helpful as well: a sore throat is a symptom of the common cold but NOT a symptom of rabies.  :happy0151:

No problem at all!

Feel free to message me on here if you get concerned again, and I will do my best to talk you down.

There are some other posts floating around here from people with rabies fears that I can link you to as well if the occasion comes up!

Yep, that's totally not a rabies symptom. Rabies is EXTREMELY rare, and if you contract it, the symptoms progress much quicker, you wouldn't just get a sore throat a month later. So don't worry! :)

Bats are very delicate as well, it would be super hard for a bat to sneak into your house, get under your covers and bite you without getting squished in the process… You'd definitely have found a swished bat in your bed!
