Getting through a job interview with anxiety... Help
« on: January 24, 2014, 10:43:52 AM »
Anyone got any tips on how to get through a job interview with anxiety? I normally get really anxious when I am out of the house on my own so the thought of trying to get through an interview is terrifying. I'm so scared that I will mess up and spend the whole interview convinced that I will pass out!

Try to focus on being "in the moment".
In other words, at every moment focus on the one thing that is happening at the time.
For instance, when you're waiting to be seen focus on how you want to present yourself (all positive) to your future boss.....
When in there talking to them focus on everything they are asking and talking about and answer accordingly.
No other thoughts but those that pertain to what is happening at the moment.

And, if you want, sip on a cup of chamomile and lavender tea or snack on some raw almonds before you go.
Either of those will help calm you and get you focused :)
(BTW: So does oats, bananas, cashews, sunflower seeds(unsalted), etc.)

Hello Emma...

Christina certainly gave you some sound advice.

I suggest another thing you can do in plan your interview.  There is a big difference between planning and projecting.  Projecting refers to concentrating on future events that are most likely never going to occur.  These foci are most often negative in nature, and cause anxiety.  As for planning your interview, you might come-up with a list of questions that you think your future boss will be asking you.  Then, sit in a chair in front of a mirror.  Ask yourself the list of questions and respond to them with watching your body language including your facial expressions.  And don't forget to smile! :happy0151:

As Christina mentioned, do your best to remain in the moment.

And after the interview, don't forget to reward yourself for doing a good job!

The very best to you, Emma!...  Chuck :sign0111:

One thing that helps me to remember especially since I have interviewed prospective candidates more than I have ever interviewed myself is that the person doing the interview is almost always nervous as well.  Knowing that the other person is also nervous helps to alleviate some of the stress for me.  Also know that the interviewer is going to understand that you are nervous so hopefully that takes some of the pressure off as well.

Other than that, be prepared with any references or resumes you may need.  Maybe write down some bullet points for the inevitable question "Tell me a little about yourself" Above all focus on your breathing - slow deep breaths will help you relax a little and not get lost in physical sensations.

Hope this helps and Good Luck!!!!

One thing I will add that has worked, try to focus on the content and not yourself. This is much like being mindful, focus on what it is you are going to say and not how you feel. Shift your focus away from how you think you feel or look.

You will probably be nervous before the interview, but during it you won't, it's hard to be anxious when you have an external focus, like interacting with the people that interview you. So no worries  :winking0008:  Those types of situations are actually very good for your anxiety as they "force" you in the moment and eliminate it for some time. You will notice this when the interview is over.
