Fear of spiders
« on: May 09, 2005, 04:35:56 PM »
We live out in the country and there are these huge spiders with very long legs that crawl on the walls every now and then. I mostly notice them when I'm sitting in the living room watching TV. As soon as I spot one it scares me so bad that I lose all interest in what I'm watching and all I can think about for the rest of the day is big, hairy spiders crawling all over me while I'm asleep.

Is this a natural fear-response that I'm having or am I getting carried away with this?. I have woken up in the mornings a few times with a big red welt on my thigh that was fair sized and swore it must be a bite from one of these spiders. I even developed cellulitis from one of these welts once.

well, i am a little afraid of the dark, thin spider legs, barbiedolls (thanx to chuckie etc) mutated, misshaped food, icky stuff on icky objects and food getting out of peoples mouth. Most of these "fears" i dont know if there more like dislikes.
When i was younger i usto get carried away whit fears, like after watching a horror movie whit aliens parasits using our bodies as houst i couldnt stop watching my back for days. I know you might think "ow well you were little" and while my references may not be a like whit youres, i was definetly getting carried away whit my fears.

I think if you think about it all day long, while youre problem is not at all uncommon, you might be getting carried away because youre loosing controll. I dont know the border of when a phobia is a common ore a neurosis, and perhaps you would be bether off asking a proffesional but my defenition is controll. I will try to help you as much as i can.
It sounds to me like you still havent lost controll in a broder sence except of course the fixed object/s of fear at that exact time, that is youre fear doesnt exceed to much towards an irrationell constant ore even dissalluded fear.

You should maybe ask youre self just to what degree this phobia prevents you in youre everyday lifestyle, conflicts whit youre happiness and if you still percept youre self in controll? Ore do you like youre milieu?

I, too, am so afraid of spiders, way more than how tiny they are in relation to me.  I have nightmares about them all the time and it has really ruined my ability to sleep.  Some of my dreams are about their webs, i get all caught up in them.  When i see a spider, i get paralysed.  I am getting better about this.  This is the weird part; when they are in the house, I'm terrified, but when they are outside, I'm okay with them.

I'm afraid of beetles, I used to get these 2 inch black buggers caught in my long black curly hair, and my sister couldnt get them out, they do bit but I was never bitten...For years even the tiniest beetles sent me to panic hell, screaming and running.

As I learned more about my anxiety problems and got better control...I find myself the last two years being ok with them now.  However those big ones still get me going

Maybe as you learn more about your anxiety and get better with it, you may calm down alittle...Heres hoping anyway ::) :) :)

I actually have pet tarantulas. I've never had a fear of things like that. Honestly, I don't know if this is even a real phobia, but I've always hated cotton balls. Don't know why. Anytime I touch or see them being touched, I get this weird feeling and half to think of something else.
