Melanoma fears...mole looks bigger?
« on: January 20, 2014, 06:09:20 PM »
Hi, I have struggled with melanoma fears over the past year, and they were mostly put to rest after a derm appointment a few months ago, but now the fears are back :( I noticed that a small mole on my forearm looks a little larger than it was in the summer. It's dark brown and symmetrical but I'm wondering: does any mole growth or change mean it's cancerous or melanoma? Thanks

Hi melanoma has been my big worry for some months now as well. I just wanted to point out that sometimes I think our anxious minds can play tricks on us leading us to believe something has changed when it really hasn't. I know there are more than a few here that can probably attest to having that happen from being hyper vigilant.

I've had a melanoma fear too and have actually had some pretty abnormal moles removed and have some pretty ugly scars as a result but neither of those were even cancer. If you do notice a change in a mole it doesn't hurt to get it looked at and chances are it won't be cancer. Since you've been to the derm fairly recently, I think you're fine. I think the normal amount of skin checks is once a year.
