Leg pain.. Terrified of blood clot!
« on: January 18, 2014, 07:21:48 PM »
Okay so some background about me. I've had a fear of getting a blip clot for about 5 years. I've had about 8-9 ultrasounds on my legs which have always been negative. I can't seem to shake this fear.

My right leg hurts, not the calve per se, but down the side . It's not horrible, but I know it's there. I was okay talking myself down, but my stupid husband told me how his moms great uncle who is 80 had shoulder surgery and ha a blood clot go to his brain and is now on life support... Thanks hubs! I'm now in a frenzy! Am I being crazy? I am so scared that's going to happen to me. My leg isn't red or swollen just hurts down te side! I have to ale a trip tomorrow and am wondering if I should go to the er. Any advice?

Relax, you are fine. Try to resist the urge to go to doctor. Getting reassurance will provide only temporary relief, but it will hurt you in the long run.

Don't fight fear...it's an emotion and when you fight emotions guess what, they just get stronger. Fill every day with different activities, keep yourself busy, anxiety will eventually diminish but like I said previously don't fight it.

No signs of a blood clot, multiple negative tests to rule one out, and purely signs of inflammation, muscle, or even sciatic nerve pain. Not a clot and I'd try to tackle the underlying anxiety about fear of the unknown rather than driving yourself crazy about this.

Thank you! I don't know why I'm so scared after soooo many negative ultrasounds. I just worry so much about it. The fear of not knowing if I have one drives me crazy!

You definitely have to address your anxiety first and foremost. You are too hypersensitive toward the sensations that move through your legs and are essentially looking for trouble. And with the hypochondriac brain - where you seek, you shall find. Treat your anxiety, change your focus, and I bet the pain goes away. I have had many pains that I swore were coming from the illness that I feared: when I dealt with the anxiety, surprise, surprise - the pains were gone.  :P

8-9 negative ultrasounds indicate that you do NOT have a clot. So there it is, no clot!

Even if you rushed to the ER right now and demanded an ultrasound on your leg, your fear will not be fixed. You will wake up tomorrow or the next day and wonder if you have a clot that day until you're to the point when you start wondering if it would be best to get one every 12 hours just to be sure. If you feel the urge to go to the doctor, make the appointment with a mental health specialist that can help you get back to living your life without terror every day.

Thank you! My last ultrasound was last year. I have resisted since than. My mind instantly thinks I need another ultrasound since its been awhile. I worry about the what ifs. What if this s a clot and I have no idea and something bad happens and I leave my two boys behind. I am trying hard to resist but the unknowns are killer

There will always be an unknown. Let go of the desire to control everything and then you'll find peace.

As far as the symptoms go, you have remind yourself that they will go away when you control your anxiety. Don't tell yourself that it's nothing - because it is SOMETHING, but that something isn't a blood clot - it is a physical manifestation of your fear and anxiety. To stop the what ifs, you have to stop the anxiety. It is the only way. Odds are it's not going to be something you can fix yourself. You need to seek out a therapist that can teach you techniques for dealing with your anxiety, and maybe even a psychiatrist that can prescribe you some medications OR a homeopath if medication isn't your thing.

I will try to remind myself of that. It's very hard. My anxiety is pretty good but the story my husband told me sent me into a frenzy! I am trying to remain logical but as we all know that is VERY HARD

I've had leg pain everyday for over a month. In December I had two negative d dimers and told that I don't have a clot...they said no reason for an ultrasound. But it is all I think about everyday...my therapist says I news to stop thinking of the what ifs. But I understand that is so hard...

you received some good replies, hope you are feeling better and less anxious! my sister had a blood clot that went to her lung, thankfully she survived after being rushed to the ER, but she said that along with the leg pain she felt VERY intense chest pain, trouble breathing, and eventually passed out. Leg pain alone can be any number of things, but it's a good idea to walk around just to get the circulation going and stretch the muscles! Hope that helps
