99.5% benign. How can doctors be so sure?
« on: January 18, 2014, 12:29:51 PM »
Hi all,

Last week my MRI revealed a small mass in the bone that connects my spine to my rib cage. It is the cause of my 9 month long back pain. My doctor is 99.5% sure it's benign but is sending me for more tests. I am so scared. I just want to figure out what it is and move forward. The waiting is the hardest part. My family has been really supportive. I'm 28 years old. I don't want to die from bone cancer :-(

Doctors can usually tell a lot by how the mass appears on the scan. They wouldn't tell you they were that sure if they weren't, so try and trust the doc.

Doctors will never ever say 100% you don't have something. Even my amazing doctor who has ran all these tests never says 100% I don't have lymphoma. But he does not believe I have it. Based on all my tests and all his knowledge. Your doctor is utterly convinced that you are fine. If he believed otherwise and ignored it, lawsuit! They don't want that. Doctors will NOT ignore things they are suspicious about. To them it's better to be safe than sorry. The only reason they can't say 100% is because I'm sure In some freak case (never happens) they don't want to get sued.

Cancerous growths and non- cancerous growths usually look different on scans. The fact he told you he was 95% confident that it wasn't cancer is great. My cousin had a huge hard baseball size growth on his hip bone that was removed and not cancerous. He was prob 26 at the time, now 28. If it makes you feel any better 3 years ago I had a bad dizzy spell and went to the ER. I had a CT done of my brain and they said there was a 1.3 cm
cyst on my brain. Seriously I went into panic mode. Whats so crazy is the ER doctor told me my scan was perfectly normal. I found out a month later about the cyst from reviewing my medical records at my physical exam with my Dr. She told me the finding was "incidental" and unrelated to my dizzy spell and cysts and tumors look very different on CT and MRI. She said brain cysts are like any other cyst and not cancer and usually never cause symptoms or problems and I have prob have the cyst since utero.

Good luck. My doctor told me that even colonoscopy's are not 100%; maybe 90-95%.
