Fear of Inherited Disease
« on: January 18, 2014, 02:03:37 AM »
Hi all,

I've had health anxiety for about 10 years - triggered by my father's cancer.

I manage the anxiety with meds when it gets really bad and try to meditate, think positive etc.

However now something awful has happened in my family and my anxiety is way out of control.

My mother has been diagnosed with a lung disease for which there is no treatment. Her sister died of the same thing 15 years ago.

Now I am freaking out that I will get this too - or already have it as I get breathless a lot with my anxiety.

I feel so overwhelmed about this.

Like, I'm going to be panicking every time I get a cough now for the rest of my life.

I know I need to deal with this, but I have no idea how.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

I'm so sorry about your mother's diagnosis. Do you know what the disease is called?

Are you also sure there are no treatments that are available? 15 years is an incredibly long amount of time in the medical industry with all of the advances they've made in technology.

Also, breathlessness is absolutely a sign of anxiety. Particularly when you're having a really tough time - so I wouldn't worry about that being related to what your mum has.

Could you speak to a doctor about the possibility of this being passed down to you and any preventative measures you could take if you are at risk?

Please keep us in the loop! I'll be sending positive thoughts your way.

Thank you. I know it's hard to believe but there is no treatment unfortunately. It is a disease where the lungs turn fibrous.

I'm going to talk to my GP and have been exercising like mad ever since we found out as I'm overweight and unfit. I suppose that's one positive.

I suspect this anxiety/panic is a distraction from what's happening with my mom, I'm still in denial that it's really happening to her :(

If her lungs are becoming fibrous could a lung transplant or something similar be an option for treatment?

It's great your looking after yourself right now by exercising and trying to lose some weight. I'm sure you're right that it's a distraction from what's happening with your mum. Anyone would need a distraction right now just to be able to process and cope with what's happening.

I'm sorry, I really don't know anything about lung disease. When was your mum diagnosed? Is there a specialist in the disease she could see?

So sorry about your situation but (1) you may not necessarily be at risk and (2) we are learning more and more that we can work to overcome what may be in family history. Maybe this can be true for your mother also.

In my family it is vascular disease, stroke, and dementia. This makes me so determined to do everything I can to keep myself as well as possible. Eating carefully, good weight, good variety of exercise, keeping the old brain active, and daily meditation. Hope you are potently motivated to fight what may be possible for you.

With your encouragement, Marc, I may just be marching around at 100 with marbles and mobility in tact. And what contribution will I be making? Wonder about that.

Thank you all. I really appreciate the support. My mom doesn't meet criteria for a transplant. Her condition is terminal. I guess my reaction is to be expected. Damn anxiety takes advantage of the situation though! I guess I just have to focus on the fact that I might not get this disease rather than that I will.
