Celexa and Trazodone
« on: January 08, 2014, 10:47:16 PM »
Hi all, I've been given 20mg of celexa for GAD (been on about 3 weeks, hasn't fully kicked in yet) and for sleep I've been given up to 100mg of trazodone. Does anyone else take that much trazodone for sleep? It does help me a lot, so I am just hoping I don't need to worry about a drug interaction, pdoc didn't indicate one but I like to ask anyways, perhaps insights can share some knowledge?

No, this shouldn't be a problem. Trazodone is a biphasic drug which at low doses acts as an antihistamine becoming an antidepressant only at doses from 150-225mg/day. As a rule sedation tends to drop off at higher doses so it can be nearly as sedating at 25-50mg as at 100mg.

NOTE: I'm not a doctor, and particularly not yours, so there may be factors I'm unaware of. Therefore all suggestions are general in nature and you should consult your doctor before following any of it, especially before changing med doses.

I used to take 50mg Trazadone and it would knock me out.  After a few months when my anxiety settled down I was able to just quit without any issues.

Ian,

I actually found 100 mg more sedating than 25-50 mg.  And I found 125 mg more sedating than 100 mg.

My sleep doctor told me the higher doses get more sedating until you get somewhere past 150 mg.
