Hearing Voices while trying to fall asleep
« on: January 05, 2014, 08:31:24 AM »
I have been diagnosed with GAD and Major Depressive Disorder. My anxiety is at an unbearable level especially because of this new thing starting to happen to me. I will be trying to relax, eyes closed, and literally 2 minutes later I will start hearing random chatter. Fragments of speech. For instance. I heard "I want to see Walt Disney." "Well then go!" Another one was "It is so easy to kill and buy a plant for ten cents." Those are just a few. It is just random fragments of sentences that make no sense. It has been happening for the past week. I cannot sleep. It seems like I cannot get passed this point to fall asleep. I am utterly exhausted and terrified that I am going insane. I just don't think it is normal to hear voices while trying to relax and fall asleep. I have read about those hallucinations that are some what normal before you fall into a deep sleep. However, I never end up falling into this deep sleep. I just lay there listening. My mother thinks it is dreams but I assure you it is not. It happens right as I am relaxing just a minute or two after I close my eyes (I timed it) and am still aware of what is really happening around me. Have anyone ever experienced something like this? Did it go away? Was it part of your anxiety? I am just so terrified because it literally happens every time I relax day or night and close my eyes.

I'm sorry that you are feeling this way.  On certain occasions I have experienced the same thing.  While falling asleep or while waking up. In my case they were hypnagogic hallucinations because I had very high anxiety and thought I was going schizo.  I learned that these were common in people with high anxiety.  I was told that the voices that I should be concerned about are the ones that feel that they actually outside of my head.  They seem like actual people are having a conversation.  Thank God I never experienced this.  But if they only happen while falling asleep, in my personal opinion, they are the caused by anxiety.  I would suggest for you to do a research on hypnagogic hallucinations.

This is not a medical advice; I can only share my own experience.

I've had this happen any number of times, always while I'm very tired or falling asleep. It doesn't sound like an actual person speaking out loud, but it's sort of like a strong mental impression of someone speaking, if that makes any sense. With me, it's usually an incoherent murmuring. Reminds me of a line from the Rainbow Connection: "Have you been half asleep, and have you heard voices?" To my knowledge, it's perfectly normal. You don't think it's dreaming because you're still partially conscious, but I'm pretty sure it's basically just the beginnings of a dream.

I think things like this can happen for a number of reasons... I have had similar experiences, where i swear I hear someone saying random meaningless things.

Last year, I had visited a sleep clinic a couple times, and they asked me about voices. They said if you are overtired, or suffering from lack of sleep, it can happen, and that it isn't you going insane. Like I said though, there can be numerous reasons why it could happen. I just wanted to put it out there that it isn't always bad.

I would mention it to your doctor. They will let you know if there is reason to be concerned.

I've heard about it and ever since then I started paying attention to it and I think I can say that I experience it from time to time. When I wake up in the morning and try to go back to sleep is when I might hear something. It's weird but I feel like I'm in this middle state between sleep and wakefulness, like I'm having thoughts yet I'm not awake haha. This ofcourse "started" when I heard about it and started looking for it. I read up on it and it is said to be fairly common and normal. Also said to be more common amongst people that are anxious, stressed out, or have poor sleeping habbits.

I have been told by numerous specialist that I don't have skitz...

But have been told I may have ocd, GAD, hypochondria, panic disorder haha.

So don't worry about it too much. IMO.

This happens to me occasionally while lying down. It's always just random words which is why I'm sure it's not schizophrenia or anything like that. I used to always hear someone screaming right before I fell asleep which would wake me right back up but after some googling I found out that it's a pretty common occurrence, so I guess the screams were changed into voices now. It is super weird to experience, kind of cool at the same time, or maybe I'm just used to it now haha

I sometimes get this especially when trying to go to sleep, it's become a chore lately trying to sleep due to the dialog in my head, can also happen upon waking as well but generally doesn't happen during the day when I'm busy, because well my brain doesn't have time to go all stupid on me.

I had this a huge amount. I got so anxious it moved into my waking day. It was all anxiety though. No psychosis to speak of even after it was happening for years. It is gone now.

I hear them all the time. Some are mean some are nice and some well they just are there. Those ones have mimick me all the time. At first it eas very terrifying. I seeked help and wanted nothing but to find help. I did but that didnt work I upped my dose and that too didnt work. I see a therapist and hes taught me a few things. Ibe learned to brave it. when i feel bad about something I get insulted by these voices and I talk back to them sometimes that works but that technique takes time and practice. The nice ones there usually my own thoughts but their is no voive to it. Mimicking is what it usually starts out as or maybe its soon after. I took the mimicking voices to a whole nother level. ha ha the voices couldnt keep up. who know who "they" are. i still do research from time to time. I dont think im skitzo ha but i was diagnosed . I was taking meds but all does did not work. So i stopped taking meds all together and ive never felt better. They  are still there but ive either grown on them embraced the or even just forgot about them. ha im in control always has been just had to figure that one out on my own as im sure you too will if you just give it a try. i have lots of coping techniques and information on what is happening to many like yourself and I.

I used to sometimes get this way before I had a problem with anxiety. I would be relaxing trying to go to bed and id hear talking inside my head. Lots of different voices. If I opened my eyes or tried to think of something , the voices would stop. Same with if I got up from bed. It wasn't a usual thing so when it happened I thought it was cool and would try to make out what the voiced were saying but I never could. This was way before I had a problem with anxiety and when I was in high school . I don't get it anymore. I'm guessing it was just because I was really really tired.

I think only twice in my life I have heard a voice say my name when I was trying to fall asleep. The one I remember was just last year when I went through a nervous breakdown and was barely functioning (because of a health scare, it sent me spiraling). I heard a man's voice say my name. It was a nice sounding man, not bad. Still, it was absolutely outside my head and like my husband was talking to me.

I also have the "voices" when going to sleep which are inside my head. I get snippets of things, words, sounds, etc. It's always as I go to sleep. I also have had hypnopompic hallucinations for about ten or more years -- when I wake in the middle of the night I see things floating around the walls the ceiling. I saw a plane once, I saw a lamp, patterns and so on. Always when I wake up, lasts about 5- 10 seconds and fades away. I have sleep apnea and find it hard to use CPAP so that could be contributing.

This happens to me all the time-especially the disjointed phrases. It's so weird, but it doesn't really happen when I'm awake unless I'm really tired. As far as I know, it's pretty normal. Just this morning I was between wakefulness and sleep, and I heard a car horn. It happens, our mind is drifting.
