I have this happen when I'm anxious. I'm falling asleep but suddenly feel like I haven't breathed and I'm smothering so I'm awakened gasping for air. Once I'm completely asleep, it never occurs. This only happens as I'm falling to sleep but not completely yet. This is very common in people with anxiety and you never really do miss a breath at all. Its actually a type of nightmare. It will persist for awhile but will go away.

I've had the exact same thing, it must be to do with anxiety. It's freaked me out a few times and stopped me from wanting to go to sleep but I think it's just one of those symptoms you get with HA.

Yes! I've had this since I was around 13-14. I'm 23 now. I will every few months wake up startled because it feels like my heart has stopped beating and I sit up quickly or jump out of bed and I can feel it going again. Is my heart actually stopping for no reason? Kinda doubt it. Mostly happens when I'm stressed. But it really feels like I'm dying! Happens right when I'm falling asleep, or have just slipped off to sleep. I'm still alive. Assume it's harmless and a type of panic attack
