I'm really looking for an educated opinion on what could be the cause of my symptoms. Just some basic background info: 27 years old, female, never been hospitalized, great health (or so I think), some kidney stone issues (had 2 this past year) and a nagging hemorrhoid are the few health problems I experienced. I'm 125 pounds and 5'8 so I am thin and I eat relatively organic and healthy. Moderate drinking on weekends (1-2 glasses of wine at most for the entire weekend) and I have never smoked, or been into fast food/soda.

It all began the week before Thanksgiving- I woke up one Sunday morning and had an egg omelet with ketchup and with a glass of OJ and got horrible burning in the middle of my chest that I had never felt before. I LOOOVE spicy foods and nothing ever bothered me up until this point (I even put tabasco in my soups to give them a kick). I thought that was really strange and the burning persisted throughout the day. It freaked me out enough to alter what I was eating and to eat bland foods and contact a GI doctor. The only other symptoms I had were random hunger pains that preceded the burning and a gnawing pain above navel that flared up in the morning before breakfast and in between lunch and dinner and when I ate the pain would subside. I also have had 2 pain free periods (which is weird for me as I normally cramp really bad- so that prompted me to think maybe its an ulcer). I went to see the GI Doctor and she gave me the breath test for H Plyori (which was negative) an abdominal ultrasound (no abnormalities) and a prescription for prilosec OTC to "treat" a potential baby ulcer. I felt fine once I started up on Prilosec and finished the 2 week course (all pain went away with the PPI). A week after stopping Prilosec I had my follow up and told the GI Doctor that I felt kind of funny again off of the PPI's (gnawing hunger pain was back and burning was occasionally back since stopping) and we both agreed to start me back up on Prilosec for another 2 week course to "treat the potential baby ulcer or inflammation" and to try to come off of the PPI again and follow up.

I went back on the PPI Prilosec on 12/11 and finished on Christmas Eve (all symptoms went away again and I was even back to eating chocolate, and some of my fav spicy foods with no issues). I felt fine coming off of the PPI (just some mild stomach discomfort which I figured was my body coming off the medicine again) until New Years Eve. I woke up on 12/31 and had pancakes with bacon - I felt terrible after that and had stomach discomfort for the rest of the day. My husband made a really delicious stir fry for New Years Eve dinner that was a tad spicy and low and behold I had the WORST crippling pain I have ever felt in my entire life. For 2-3 hours I was in agony - pain above my navel and up to my upper chest (this burning, sore like someone punched me feeling). It finally subsided enough to get some sleep after the ball dropped, but I feel constant tightness and discomfort. I continued for the next few days up until TODAY actually to feel horrible. Ever since that spicy meal I have lost my appetite, my stomach is in constant pain (hardly any relief) with indigestion and heartburn, my throat feels tight when I swallow (top of the throat literally right when you first swallow- not your esophagus or down further) and I can feel acid in the back of my throat although it doesn't actually make me gag or regurgitate. I am not nauseous and haven't been throughout this whole ordeal which is nuts! Today is the first day I woke up with a little bit of an appetite and forced myself to eat a bowl of cereal for breakfast, 2 bananas for lunch and animal crackers for a snack. I keep feeling less acid and a little less pain the more bland stuff I put back into my stomach, but I still feel like something is really wrong/off. Why the heck did I lose my appetite so suddenly? Why hasn't it returned? I normally have a great appetite.

The intense stomach pain from the last few days is making me think its something super severe. Why the heck do I feel worse coming off of the Prilosec then I do before I started it? Stomach cancer symptoms are so generic and it completely frightens me. I still have discomfort and stabbing pains under my left rib cage where stomach is along with hardly any appetite. I can't get an endoscope done for a week until next Friday- 1/10. I am just looking for you guys to shoot straight with me and let me know in your opinions what you think may be wrong with me.

If you made it this far you can also assume I am a hypochondriac, but normally a healthy one. The amount of pain almost sent me to the ER the other day.  :(

I think you are fine, Stomach Cancer is a rare cancer, and it mainly happens in men above 50(I had a scare awhile back but was relieved when I looked at the age group because I'm 20). It just sounds like a bad case of acid reflux, and when I went off my antacid it got much much worse then it was before I took it so I'm doing another round of it. My symptoms are very similar to yours and I LOVE spicy food, but I've had to get it out of my diet, along with greasy food. I think your appetite is fading because you're so anxious, I lost my appetite for awhile when I was my most anxious. Anxiety also makes acid reflux much much worse! I suggest maybe picking up another round of prilosec and maybe some stretching in your chest by putting your arm on a wall and turning your body the opposite way to help your chest loosen up, and some deep breathing exercises, those all help me at least with my acid reflux/anxiety.

Thanks for responding. I know my anxiety is bad, but it was no reason to completely lose the sensation of being hungry. I've been eating apples today after researching that they neutralize stomach acid and they have helped so much. My throat doesn't feel as tight and the upper chest pain/burn is better. I'm even a bit hungry for dinner tonight- I am terrified to eat anything with any spice or acidity as that pain was awful- I thought I was going to die from it. I don't want to go back on Prilosec if I am having this awful rebound coming off of it after only a month. I'm reading that maybe I should have tapered off instead of quitting cold turkey- wish my GI doc would have told me that.

I still don't understand why I have tightness/soreness and a stabbing pain on and off right under my left breastbone (like its right under the ribs there- where your stomach/pancreas sit). Maybe my stomach is just super sore from all the rebound acid these past 4 days? I'm starting to wonder if the pain under my left rib cage is pancreas related?!
I don't have jaundice, nausea, or back pain and it wasn't enlarged on my ultrasound scan last month, but you never know.  I hate anxiety!!!!!!  :traurig001:

Anyone have previous pancreas issues that care to share what pain there would feel like?

Now the last few nights I've been woken up out of a deep sleep with what I perceive to be a panic/anxiety attack.
It's like an internal alarm at 5:30am the past 2 nights. I'm suddenly awake and have a pounding heartbeat. I will toss and turn and almost fall back asleep only to jolt back awake. It's making me miserable. Any tricks for calming down?

I'm still convinced I'm going to be told it's not an ulcer, but stomach cancer on Friday after my endoscopy - our minds are our worst enemies. I'm trying to be logical with my age and the fact that the symptoms improve with a bland diet, but because the pain is still there while not on Prilosec that I have just delayed the inevitable by taking it for the past month and masked the real issue.

My clients son who is 29, had pancreatitis and he had to be hospitalized as he was in such extreme pain that he almost passed out and
was vomiting constantly and violently.

I am going through something similar right now (read my post here http://www.anxietyzone.com/index.php/topic,81070.0.html). Anyway, it sounds like your doctor knows what is wrong - its acid reflux/gerd. I believe i may have the same thing. I initially though mine was gallbladder but i am now leaning towards acid reflux. Its more than likely NOT your pancreas. I say this as when I have seen the symptoms of it, you are in the ER, and cannot stand them as the other poster has said. Also anxiety makes stomach issues 10x worse and anxiety can also make your stomach hurt, cause loss of appetite, fullness, bloating, nausea, etc. I doubt you need anything else other than what you gi said. you had an ultrasound and were seen by an expert.

Yeah I do feel better about it not being pancreatic related.
I just am spooked with how this all came out of no where. I just had mild heartburn or ulcer symptoms before Prilosec and now I am a wreck off of it. It's been 5 days since that awful spicy meal where I had 4 hours of the worst indigestion/heart burn pain ever and I still don't feel back to normal. I've been eating small meals with apples, bananas, yogurt, all things to reduce acid naturally and I still don't have my normal appetite back. I've lost 3 pounds since then from the small food intake.

I have had pretty consistent pain in my upper abdomen for 5 days now and I'm starting to be concerned- I mean Prilosec would take away symptoms and hide a cancer lurking.  The only reason I haven't broken down and ran to the ER for an upper GI, bloodwork and CT scan is the patience/sanity of my poor husband. He thinks I should just wait for my endoscopy on Friday.  I know I don't have the "later stage" symptoms for stomach cancer like nausea, bloating after meals/in general (I'm thin so I can tell easily), pooping blood/tarry stools, but the early generic symptoms could be anything - heartburn/indigestion/abdomen pain- have all of that!  :sick0002:  :sick0002:

there is a very very high chance you are just fine and do not have cancer. cancer presents other symptoms too that most people do not pay attention to but us anxiety people would have been freaking out from those. if the specialist thought for a second that what it was they would have ordered tests for it. it would have showed up on the ultrasound. the endoscopy you are getting is to look for ulcers and gerd. more than likely this is 100% your anxiety and some acid reflux. once you had the first attack, you stomach was a bit strained and your anxiety is just multiplying that.

I had the most food since the crazy heart burn incident 4 days ago and am starting to feel a little better.
I had bland chicken breast, some rice and broccoli and was able to get it all down, not nauseous and no real heartburn afterwards.
I keep telling myself that I would barely be able to eat anything if it was something serious.
I'm just glad my appetite is returning, slowly, but returning.
I will let you guys know how my endoscopy goes on Friday - not sure if they will biopsy any tissue as I have read conflicting reports on that.
I hate reading posts and then no one updates on how they are doing afterwards....as hypochondriacs I think it would help us all to hear what is actually wrong with someone.

they didnt update because they realized they were ok. your stomach sounds just fine. getting better pretty much means that its nothing serious. serious things keep getting worse and usually very quickly before we can even come to these forums and ask for help:) for instance the pancreas thing keeps getting worse and worse like to the point where you are passing out from flu like symptoms. it never feels better for one second.

I was on Prilosec for 2 years and I started bringing myself off of it. I was taking one pill per 24 hours, then cut it back to twice a week and now I haven't been on it for over a month. My stomach feels upset sometimes, I get weird pains that come and go, but I think its just my digestive tract returning back to normal.

Wanted to provide an update to hopefully provide relief to everyone with weird random stomach concerns since mine were all over the place (see above). Just had my endoscopy this morning and it was a BREEZE! My throat isn't sore and the "twilight sleep" anesthesia with propofol is the best sleep ever- no real grogginess afterwards.

The doctor said I had acid reflux after all with mild gastritis and 2 stomach polyps (2mm in size- super tiny and not the cause of any of my pain- just found incidentally). Have to wait a few days for biopsy to confirm but doctor was 99% sure they are benign in nature and don't indicate future chances of getting any type of stomach cancer.

I was planning my funeral last week with all the anxiety and stress and I was 200% convinced I had stage 4 stomach cancer. I just want everyone to take a step back and realize we do this to ourselves. I am going to be looking into a low dose of Xanax going forward.
