Sinus problems affecting anxiety?
« on: January 02, 2014, 07:40:56 PM »
I have had issues with my sinuses for a long time.  I've had a few sinus infections this year as well and am currently under the care of an ear-nose-throat doctor to have surgery.  That's not what I'm worried about - I'd have the surgery today if I could!

I've noticed that whenever I'm not feeling well, besides the usual headache from the sinuses, I start to have almost irrational thoughts - like does my fiance want to marry me (he does!), what if I'm fired, all kinds of silly things.  The only respite is sleep, but I can't do that all day long.

Can sinus problems affect anxiety?  I know when I'm not feeling well that my anxiety tends to be worse.  I've been on many rounds of antibiotics this year and I'll feel better for a little while and then boom, another sinus infection.

For me, yes. Allergies, too. They just make you feel wonky. I was suppose to have sinus surgery, but anxiety got the best of me and I cancelled the day off. I actually attribute a lot of my anxiety to my sinus and allergies.

Thanks for replying.  :)  I made an appointment with my doctor for tomorrow morning.  I hope it's not another sinus infection, but my head's felt foggy for a few days now.  :(

The surgery doesn't scare me.  I had four impacted wisdom teeth pulled out - same day, all of them! - when I was 18.  Since then needles don't scare me, lol.

Yep, yet ANOTHER sinus infection.  I actually laughed when my doctor told me what it was, and he looked at me a bit strangely!  Lol  I told him I must be the queen of sinus infections- and I will happily abdicate my throne!

More antibiotics, prednisone and I purchased a humidifier and steam vapor inhaler to help my sinuses.  Hoping and praying that the insurance approves the balloon sinuplasty that is tentatively scheduled for later in the month.

Glad he have u some medicine why don't you ask for a referral to ent specialist? I suffered for a long time with blocked sinus empaired smell and taste I still do some days it went on for over a year before I was finally refered I had a camera down my nose very strange experience lol. I have servere allergies and instead of the usually itchy eyes constant cold symptoms the lining of my nose gets inflamed which effects obviously my sense if smell and that effects your taste! Vicious cycle... I now have a special nasal spray for my specific issue and feel fine majority of the time it doesn't help us having dogs and if it's a rainy day my allergy from the dogs is very bad.. My anxiety was aggregated for a while I thought I had a brain tumour or some disorder effecting my brain very horrible thoughts so yes I think you feeling bunged up does effect your omid I mean a big part of your enjoyment in life is been able to smell and taste food. I found it very hard when people around me would say ooo that smells nice and I couldn't smell anything! It used to be that bad I could stand over a pan of curry or something that strong garlic etc and not get anything. I then was like well if there was a gas leak I wouldn't smell it! Freaked me out. If u can relate keep going back to the docs till they do something x

I find they make me very anxious as well. There are just so many weird symptoms accompanying sinus infections/sinusitis that are maddening and persistent and put me on edge. I get issues every year around this time and just was told Friday I have an infection. Hopefully going to see an ENT specialist to discover the root of the problem.

Hi Gemma,

I am under the care of an ENT.  I'm waiting for my insurance to approve the balloon sinuplasty procedure.  Anyone I have spoken to who has had this procedure done has felt 100% better and is without sinus infections.  I'm hoping and praying I will have the same results!
