Please help me with this: neck
« on: December 30, 2013, 06:41:11 AM »
Please can people help me with this as I'm just so scared and confused.

In the summer I started to become aware of my neck, noticing my right side felt bigger, harder muscles etc.

I was obsessed with lymphoma and despite my gp trying to reassure me I could not settle. So she let me see a haematologist who specialises in blood cancers.

I had an examination and she ran bloods for cancer markers such as lymphoma etc. All came back normal. I then went back 6 weeks later and was examined again so they could see if there had been any changes and they said there were not. Basically the letter to my gp said there was no sign of lymphopathy.

During this time I saw an ENT specialist as I had fluid in my ears. He examined my head and neck and looked in my throat and said there was nothing to feel. I then saw him three months later (which was start of this month). I was going on about lymph nodes. So he examined my head and neck again and said again there was nothing other than normal things to feel. He also scoped my nose and throat as I said I had a feeling of something stuck at right tonsil. All was normal.

But I just cannot settle. I saw my gp again today and she examined my neck and said she honestly cannot feel swollen lymph nodes. She said the right side is a bit fuller than the left but it's prob always been like that and also I'm spending hours poking and prodding my neck.

She has offered me an ultrasound of my neck because she says everything she has done to try and reassure me has not worked. Nor has the 2 specialists word for it reassured me. The thing is I'm terrified of ultrasounds.

I'm sorry this is a long post. I just need I hear what others think?

I think many of us are born with on thing bigger than the other. I was told my one foot is slightly
bigger than the other. One of my optic nerves is bigger then the other optic nerve. I remember a number
of years ago when I was shaving, I thought I felt a lump in my neck. I went to the ENT and he said it was part of my neck.
I think that you just happen to have one side of your neck that is slightly bigger then the other. You have had some pretty good
exams and nothing was found. I would try to get past it, although I find that it is easier said that done sometimes.

Little doubt this is anxiety playing its tricks. One root of anxiety is stress. Stress can collect in some favorite spots. Neck is definitely one of them.

You might consider getting some neck massage or exercise it yourself. Try YT. I do neck exercise in my daily tai chi warm up. Gently move your head to one side, raise the shoulder to meet the neck. Slowly bend to the other side. Takes a bit of effort. Gradually you may be able to do a full head circle. Wishing you all the best.

Yes.  I have experienced the exact same sensations in the neck as you have, only I didn't have all that testing done (i was close to requesting it though).  I did have multiple Drs tell me it was not swollen glands (which I really thought it was).   For me it was muscle tension & it only got better with a massotherapist.  Definitely from muscle tension (anxiety, for me,  makes my neck & shoulders tight).  My right side is worse than my left & caused me my problems.  I do believe the muscles in my neck (like everything else) is asymetrical.  They will always seem different on one side than the other.  Stretching & relaxation works & helps, but if the swollen sensation is strong, it would be relieved more quickly seeing a massotherapist then continuing to stretch & relax the muscles afterward.  Hope this helped.

If you have had multiple people tell you there is nothing wrong, then it's just your anxiety.  Remember they are the professionals.  They went to med school for a long time.  I'm recently getting over an oral cancer fear.  I was constantly feeling my neck for swollen nodes.  I think my left side is bigger than the right.  I recently went to the ENT and he felt my neck and didn't feel anything abnormal.  HA can make you imagine things.  Try not to focus on it.

Thank you.

I am planning to book in for a massage very soon. I have also been seein an osteopath but dont know whether to try a chiropractor???

Do you think if there was a tumour or something making it bigger the doctors would have been able to tell something was wrong?

Yes they would know.  Also, depending on which massotherapist you see, they can tell you what they are feeling (and if you need to see a chiro - they can tell you if you are misaligned but can't fix it, you would then have to see a chiro). The guy I see is has a nuring liscense too so I know he knows what he is feeling -all muscle.

Kcg thanks. The osteopath I saw told me my neck is full of trigger points on the right side. He said the things I am feeling are not node. I hope he is right.

I'm sitting here trying to tell myself that I've been worried about this for 1.5 years. In the past 5 months I have seen 3 specialists for cancer and head and neck. Jeez one of them was just 3 weeks ago and I had also saw him in September! But yet I think I know what I am feeling better than they do??

My own gp has been dealing with me about all this for about 2 years at least! Feeling my neck every few months for me and I swear she's been feeling it nearly every week for the past 3 months for me!!! There was one node she mentioned that was up when I had a bad viral cold. I had found it and she said it was not even really classed as swollen as in her words it was tiny. It went down a bit afte that.

I just don't understand because when I feel in I can feel a couple of really squishy bumps. About half a cm. maybe more, but when I move
My head certain ways it straightens out? Then when I'm lying down its more round? Do nodes do that? Do they change shape?

You may just be feeling muscles or the like. You have been examined by physicians and if there was any issue,
it would have been found by now.
