Should I be worried about rabies?
« on: December 29, 2013, 12:56:38 PM »
A couple days ago I had two scratches about 2 cm long close to my eye. I have no idea where they came from. We do have a cat and a dog but don't think they would scratch me. I don't think it was bleeding but it was a little swollen. It actually went away about 10 hours later. I'm worried about a bat getting in the house, scratching me overnight, giving me rabies and escaping without anyone noticing. One side of me knows I'm overreacting but there's another side that keeps thinking any things possible. Thanks for reading.

Hi SGR...

First of all, you should not be worried about developing rabies from a scratch on your face.  A bat getting into your house and then leaving, undetected, would be pretty close to impossible.  On top of that, the poor little creature we call a bat, has gotten a bum-rap.  People think of bats as disease-ridden, and they are not.  It is now estimated that only about 1% of bats carry rabies.  So you can see that your chances are way below slim and none.

I would recommend that your focus on alleviating your anxiety/worry, whether you are able to do this on your own, or by seeking professional help, such as seeing a therapist.

The best to you, SGR!...  Chuck
