13 year old daughter has possible nodular melanoma
« on: December 24, 2013, 08:23:03 PM »
My daughter is fair skinned, plays outdoor sports and has had sun burns. I noticed this area on her upper arm that is raised like a large wart and is round, it is dark pink with red areas in the leasion. It is not quite 1/4 inch and almost as big as an eraser head. I am scared to death it is cancer. If I could I would take her to a dermatologist today. any put would  help. I am not doing well about to take her to the ER. I know this  is a very bad cancer and I am scared to death.

Melanomas are usually black, or very dark brown, not pink or red.

Your HA knows it's cancer, but it probably isn't.  It could be any number of weird things growing on her.

A friend of mine, a girl, had a weird growth on the inside of her leg in college. It was gross and seriously looked like a testicle growing out of her leg.  It was nothing. Just a weird benign growth.

My mother had a big blue black growth on her leg for quite a while. One doctor shaved it off but it grew back. She finally went to a dermatologist who freaked out when she saw it and wanted to remove it right then and there. It ended up being a benign blue mole.

Try to remember that our HA causes us to think of the worst case scenario first but it is usually wrong!

Definitely no.
Melanoma at her age is pretty much inexistent. Besides, nodular melanoma is one of the most rare types of melanoma, so the chances of her getting it at her age are quite slim.
Nonetheless, you could lecture her a bit about sunscreen...that's important.
Merry Christmas.

So now I found a pic of a normal mole that looks just like hers. I am sick of googling. I want to pull my hair out. Still going to take her to dermatologist asap for my sanity and her health. My meds are not working going to go back to doc for more help for myself.

When you worry about your child it is natural to get upset. The odds of her having melanoma at her age
are remote and I think you are doing the right thing going to a dermatologist to at least help ease your mind.
