Help me get past this heart fear
« on: December 24, 2013, 03:56:41 PM »
Hello my name is Joshua. I am a 22 year old male roughly about 210lbs 6 foot tall.  I have no history in my family of early heart disease or heart attacks/cardiac arrest.  I have total cholesterol of 154, HDL Cholesterol of 54, LDL Cholesterol of 80. Triglycerides of 99.  My fast glucose is 89. I have had 5 EKGS, 2 Chest X-Rays, 3 sets of blood work drawn. All have come back normal. My resting heart rate is 54-64.  I need help to stop worrying about this heart attack/Cardiac arrest fear.  I have been really worried about chest discomfort and lack of energy.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,
Joshua

Here's something I've been telling heart worriers around here. Make your heart rate go up by excercising. Note your HR when you stop and then rest for 2 minutes. Then measure your HR again. If your HR dropped by 15 or less, see a doctor. (but it seems that you already did and the results showed nothing so use this as a relief from worry) If it dropped for more (like 30), you have nothing to worry about.

Joshua, Like you I have major heart fears. I fear sudden cardiac death. I am very active and mountain bike a ton... There are times I push my heart rate in the mid 190's esp when racing on a big climb.... I always tell myself hey, my heart didn't blow out then... why now?  It's easier to say that now, but in the depth of an anxiety attack it is nearly impossible to rationalize this.  Have you tried CBT or exposure?

Some day, you are going to die. And you won't be able to stop it when it happens. So when you start t get those fears, just think "If its going t kill me today, then bring it on." At which point you will either die or not. In both cases, you will be less concerned about future heart anxiety. It's a plan with no downside.

Sudden cardiac death typically has underlying risk factors such as prior recent heart attack,
hardening of the arteries, use or cocaine, etc.
