I Need To Be Talked off A Ledge- SCA
« on: December 18, 2013, 04:38:30 PM »
My fear of cardiac arrest is consuming me. Today, my breathing has been super irregular. Everytime I try to breathe normally, my tounge will stick to the roof of my mouth and I'll try to breathe and I'll be unable to. When I do stand up or look at something  while being still, it feels like I am not breathing and no air is coming in or out. I get really nauseous when this happens as well, my face flushes and I get hot. I'm bloated as hell and I feel a little weak. This has been going on for four hours. I read that breathing issues and nausea precede cardiac arrest. When I took my pulse, it was crazy fast and then it would slow for a lot of beats and that scared me. I'm 15 with no history of heart issues, a clean EKG in June, and a recent heart listen to by my doctor- who did not seem concerned. These symptoms came on after I ate, and part of me thinks that I ate something bad but things have been super stressful for me as of lately. I'm scared, especially about the breathing. :( Can anyone help me?

My doctor told me that when you are nervous or anxious, your breathing can become irregular and
you will not breath properly, which can cause dizziness, tingling and nausea. Your chances of having
cardiac arrest at your age are extremely remote.

I agree with marc, when I am very anxious my breathing gets shallow, my heart rate goes up, and so on. It could be that you are just experiencing stress right now because of your Mom having surgery. You are sooooo young, there is no possible way there is anything wrong with your heart. Don't worry about your heart, try some relaxation techniques to help you relax; lay down on your back and close your eyes, starting with you feet, consciously relax your muscles till they are literally limp, and work your way all the way up to the top on your head. Every time I do that particular technique I end up falling asleep!

It also feels like my breathing is way too slow and I will suddenly stop. It's scary.

You need to take deep controlled breaths when you feel anxious and this will help you feel better.

Breathing always seems so SO much harder when you focus on it. It's similar to blinking. As soon as you think about it. The automatic response suddenly becomes so much harder.

You think to yourself 'am I blinking too much?' 'Do I normally blink this fast?' And then if you try to slow it down or speed it up your eyes begin to burn :)

Breathing is the same. Over thinking it and focussing your attention on it only makes it harder. I know it's hard, but if you think about something else for a while. Maybe play a game on your phone or read a story online or watch a funny video - I guarantee you'll find yourself breathing easier.

You're ok :)

Gomubkai is right. Try to do something different than focusing on your breathing. Light yoga or funny video's. Both items work for me and take the edge off.
