Does anyone have tips to stop mentally scanning for symptoms?
« on: December 16, 2013, 04:34:02 PM »
Hey everyone

I've been doing a fair bit better the past month or so. A few times I've had dodgy symptoms and have been a bit scared but I've been trying to not let the doubt and the fear stick and I've been trying to give the fear less attention.

I've noticed though, that I am still mentally scanning my body a LOT looking for strange symptoms etc.

I'm not entirely sure how to stop. Is it just a matter of moving my thoughts to something else over and over again until my mind doesn't default to scanning?

Or is here something else I could try?

Thanks for the reply.

I guess it really is a matter of trying to rewire my brain then?

try to focus on activities that absorb a lot of your attention. I find I am much better if I am thinking about constructive things. To this end I have set myself a positive constructive thing to do everyday, whcih is both enjoyable, will make my life better and takes my mind off my body.

This and I make a great effort to not go on the lookout for seeing things on my body. I am not so thrilled about this but at the moment it is neccessary.

In terms of "re-wiring your brain" cognitive behavioral therapy is good for this. Consider getting in for a few sessions. If that's not possible look online and think about getting your own CBT workbook

To add to the re-wiring your brain comment.

This is actually physically what the brain does. The classic study of this focussed on the hippocampus of London Taxi drivers and showed that intense learning of spatial information meant that the structure actually physically grew to be able to work with all this information. Our brains are malleable and it is possible for conscious cognition to affect how it works.
