Do you ask on medical forums about symptoms?
« on: December 14, 2013, 04:13:41 PM »
I freaked out a few days ago when my dog got nasal drainage (clear) in my eye.
I asked on Medhelp.org and got an answer for free from an eye specialist.  I also posted on Healthtap.com and paid 99 cents (you can only post very short questions) and 8 doctors answered within hours.

It really helps me deal with my fear a lot of the time, tho sometimes I get worried about stuff and they're too quick to dismiss my worries and it doesn't help at all (bumps on my throat).

If you get answers from online doctors, does it help you stop worrying?

I've never done it myself on a forum but I do read posts on medical forums from people who post symptoms similar to mine and yes it helps.....for a minute!

I find that with my anxiety I am constantly asking from reassurance from my GP, my family and my friends.  They all make me feel better for a short time but then it just starts again all over.  I find that here helps me as not only does posting on the forum make me feel better but then I can go back again (if I need to) and re-read peoples responses to help me fight the anxiety. Nothing makes you feel better than someone else going "yes!  I have that too and I'm fine".

I asked a question on health tap. The answer I got was very vague and not definitive at all. I gave up on that and am just deciding to work with my doctor directly as he knows my history and can do any physical exams and what not. When I posted on medhelp, I liked it because I got support from people who have the condition I believe I have. So those were based on experience. I am trying to live by not believing I have specific illness unless I am actually diagnosed by a doctor with tests(actual data), but the irrational thinking comes in and sometimes it feels like assuming the worst is best because you can be somewhat prepared when you get the bad news? Ugh, can't stand this thing....
