Low Potassium
« on: December 10, 2013, 04:14:38 PM »
Has anyone had low potassium before? If so,how long did it take to build it up with meds?
I have had it low before but it was fairly quickly that I felt better. I feel terrible and starting to worry. It's only been a day since I was told it was low and took med at the ER and took med today. I will take more tonight and 9 more days. I feel anxious at times, and feeling tired.
Just need some reassurance I guess.

I've had low potassium before, but I've never taken medications for it. My doctor just told me to go eat a banana and sent me on my way.

Oh okay..I have had medicine twice before for it but never had many symptoms of it being low but this time I have had horrible symptoms. I guess that's why they gave me med again.

Oh really? So yours is always low?? I had a virus and that brought mine down. I just don't like the feeling I've had...but it has obviously been low for quite while -at least since the end of October. Nit sure how long it was low before that, but I had it checked in June and it was normal.

The blood work from the panic attack that sent me to the hospital showed I had some low potassium at the time. I took some for a couple days until I met with a kidney specialist. We determined it was a one off thing, and I didn't need the potassium anymore. That was over a year and a half ago so my potassium level has seemingly been fine since.

Thanks for replies everyone. I just had bloodwork and I asked for potassium to be checked just to see if it was ok now. I hope it returned to normal.

For future reference, when my potassium is a bit low - as it tends to be - a nurse suggested I drink orange juice, as it's apparently quite high in potassium.  It does seem to help when I get leg cramps!

Thanks mollyfin. I have had some orange juice quite frequently lately. I heard the same thing. I've noticed my potassium gets low when I'm dealing with anxiety pretty bad. It's very strange.
