Blood tests-multiple myeloma
« on: December 07, 2013, 07:41:27 PM »
Feeling mixed emotions about my hematologist appointment. He seemed very convinced that the reason my platelets are low is due to something like ITP versus more scary reasons. He ordered more tests...most I am familiar with, but I did happen to google one of them, protein electrophoresis, and I read it can be use to screen for multiple myeloma. I googled that and now I am super scared I have it! I am a 25 year old white female. I have a history of slightly low platelets and for the last 4 years or so, I have been dealing with lower left back pain...the pain usually worsens after bending over for periods of time. I have also tested with blood in my urine on more than one occasion. I am really scared! :(

Question. So you're saying that one of your symptoms is lower back pain on your side? And blood in your urine? Is there any other reason why you think you could have this?

Low platelets as well...blood and sometimes protein in my urine. Those symptoms combined with the fact my hematologist ordered this test in the first place...

Sorry to hear all that. What tests did they do to begin with to find out your platelets were low? Was it a CBC?

O ok. I apologize for being so annoying with all the questions. I have a cousin who has said he experienced everything you wrote about which is why I'm asking. I kept telling him to go to the doctor along with me since we are both hypochondriacs. He finally did and they did a CBC on him as well but didn't give him a urinalysis even though he told them he has occasional blood in the urine. They said because of the back pain he described that could possibly causing the blood in urine. I told him to go back and ask and now he doesn't seem to want to worry about it anymore.

I don't know how to read his or my own blood test. What was the # and code they used for your blood test. All these codes are so confusing. I only know what the RBC and WBC mean.

O wow since you pointed out what everything means (helpful btw), I looked at my own blood tests and my MPV = 7.0!!!

Is that what yours is at? I asked my own doctor after I got the results if everything seemed fine, not about that specifically, but in general and she said nothing seemed worrisome. NOW IM WORRIED!
