Waking up with vertigo
« on: December 07, 2013, 09:51:05 AM »
Woke up this morning after a good nights sleep and experienced vertigo when I started to sit up.   Laid back down and experienced two more stints of it when turning my head different ways.  I've had vertigo before but it usually happens when laying down quickly looking strsight up. I'm sure its nothing as there were no other effects but it still triggered my anxiety in the worst way. A non blood  related relative just had a stroke which has maybe put me more on edge. Now I have the sensation of imbalance but I think its my anxiety.  Anxiety is sort of like walking  atight rope for me, your fine until you look down.

It sounds like it might be postural hypotension. Your blood pressure drops going from laying to getting up - happens when your adrenals are tired (with anxiety triggering fight or flight adrenaline production) and you might be moving into low cortisol (morning is a low cortisol time) and low sodium territory (eat a bit more salt). You can tell if this is your issue if you've noticed you get blood sugar crashes. So your blood sugar goes way too low, you feel cranky, you might get shaky, anxiety, mood swings, that kind of thing. Maybe?

In any case, it's a typical anxiety symptom, yes.

I had a similar experience recently and my ENT physician told me that it was
most likely benign positional vertigo. He told me that this occurs when you get up,
lie down or when you turn your head. He said that the brain eventually will most likely
adjust for this and it will occur not at all or less frequently.

thanks from what I've read I think it might be benign positional vertigo. I wish there was just a quick way to get rid of it. Any idea if I should see an ENT or a neuro for this. You mentioned talking to your ent but my doctor referred me to go see a neuro.

I am not a doctor, but is sounds like an ENT would be the one to see, as dizziness and
vertigo is an ENT's specialty. Years ago my ENT sent me for a brain MRI because I had
ringing in my ears (he had me take the test to help reassure me).
