Lymphoma fear driving me nuts
« on: November 14, 2013, 07:48:19 PM »
Guys i'm slowly descneding into total madness. I recently had a tonsillitis whereby my right tonsil got swollen and the left one did not. Had a pretty rough throat ache to go a long with it, for a few days i could bearly swollow anything at all. The pain and fever resolved but and i believe that the swelling on the tonsil reduced a little as well but its still not the same as the left one. Anyhow since that was my second throat ache in the last month and a half i went to see the GP and he wasn't overy concerned, gave me a round of antibiotics which didn't seem to help too much. Did a CBC as well, cos i insisted, it came back totally normal. What bugs me there is, how come a CBC shows no elevation of white blood cells during an infection ? Anyhow the bad throat ache resolved quickly but it still kinda persists on an on and off basis three weeks after the main infection. So a week ago i panicked and went to the ER where i was checked on by an ENT in training and he remarked that it is just a case of infection and in his opinion there is no question of any kind of malignancy. But i guess he saw my distress so he gave me a refferal to an ENT. I've seen the ENT the very next day and he seemed even less concerned, i inquirred about the possiblity of cancer and he said that the titssue on the left and right tonsil is indentical in texture and general outlook and said he was totally sure it wasn't cancer. Well that put my mind at ease for about 5 days, at that point i developed what i guess was a stomach infection. Had to throw up once and had diarrhea and had some fever that day. the fever resolved in the course of the day. I should mention hereby that my sister had recently had a bout of stomach virus. Anyhow that sent me head spinning again , i developed all kinds of crazy theories how either its lymphoma supressing my immune system or some kind of lymph nodes swollen in my stomach, this i picked off the internet, causing pressure and causing me throw up. So i somehow managed to arrange for a second opinion ENT which i saw the next day. He was a really nice and listened to my complaints, checked for the lymph nodes in my neck which i swear, especially on the right side i could feel a pretty big hard one, said he could only find two quite small lymph nodes about 0.5 CM on both sides. Regarding the tonsil same conclusion as the other ENT, somewhat swollen but otherwise healthy looking tissue. Even said he was prepared to put it on paper that he guarantees i don't have any kind of lymphatic cancer. Anyhow, i am afraid he might have missed the lymph node im talkign about, eventhough i realize that is very unlikely but as you guys know anxiety moves in strange ways. In addition my stomach is still not that great, still some nausea, and right now i am up at 1 am, woke up with i guess a semi panic attack, huge acid reflux and a hot flush. Hot flush scaring the crap out of me cos i read on internet that lymphoma patients feel warm all the time and i feel pretty warm right now and nauseous and generally shitty. This is seriously interfering with my life, i mean yestreday i was meant to hold a presentation at my university but had to excuse myself, said i was feeling extremly ill, in fact i was jsut reading some scientific studies, through my uni library, about unilateral tonsilar enlargment and how a few studies how found that a certain percentage of them discover a malignancy. So i'd really appreciate if someone can please please help. Btw made an appointment with a psychologist today.

Your fears can all be accounted for by anxiety. I came on here to ease my fears about nausea, even though I know anxiety is the smoking gun. Your negative results are strong indicators that its all in your head. Relax :)

From what I read you seem fine. I've had that worry before and it was nothing

This is my first post here but I relate to you fully. At the moment my right tonsil is swollen and my left is a considerate amount smaller than my right. I discovered my swollen tonsil at the time when I had a sever throat infection (which was localized to the same side of my throat that my swollen tonsil is on). I don't know how long my tonsil was swollen but I do know that it was swollen before I got the infection. I went to my doctor soon after. Unlike you though, my doctor was concerned. He asked me to go through the "wait and see" process and he called me back 2 weeks later. He realized that my tonsil had not changed and he immediately contacted an ENT specialist. They, also concerned, contacted me straight away but I did not book an appointment as of yet. He done a blood test and since he hadn't contacted him since (with the results) so I presume they are OK. In my opinion, I reckon that my tonsil is swollen due to tonsil stones. Also, when I look at my throat in the mirror and squeeze my tonsils together and the same pressure, I notices that the two tonsils are actually similar in size. Maybe one is more hidden than the other or something.

Just a general question: Who here has ever in their lives had a single swollen tonsil? And what, if any, was the cause of it?
