I started on 25 mg of Zoloft and upped to 50mg after a week, I was also given .25mg Xanax to use as needed. To be honest the first 3 weeks I was on Zoloft were not a lot of fun. I got every start up side effect in the book (nausea, increased anxiety, headache, insomnia, GI upset, etc) but the Xanax really helped keep the anxiety manageable. There were times I wanted to throw in the towel and stop taking them but every thread I found on this site said to stick it out and I am very glad I did. By week 4 I was feeling better and now on week 5 everything but the sweaty hands and feet have gone away and my anxiety is more controlled than it has been in years.
Keep in mind:
a) I am a cheap date and very sensitive to meds to I am on the absolute lowest therapeutic dose of both Zoloft and Xanax, most people need higher doses and you have to ramp up the Zoloft in stages. When you increase your dose some of the side effects may temporarily return. This is perfectly normal.
b) It can take up to 8 weeks for the therapeutic effects of Zoloft to fully kick in. This is because the drug is actually changing your brain chemistry and this takes time, the exact amount of time varies from person to person due to our unique body chemistry so your experience may not be the same as mine.
c) Not to be gross but Zoloft can cause gas and diarrhea so that me be what's making your stomach feel lumpy. I know its hard but try to resist the urge to poke as you may be creating a self fulfilling prophecy: you poke and cause inflammation so you worry more and poke more and the inflammation gets worse and...you get my point. When you feel the urge to poke try taking a deep breath and saying an affirmation, something like "I am healthy and I am strong and I will get through this." Then go d something to occupy your mind. I have a stupid game I play on my phone when I am feeling jittery that works for me.
I am not a doc but it sounds like you might need a benzo to see you through the Zoloft start up. This is totally normal and Zoloft is usually prescribed with one so I am surprised your doc did not give you one. You may want to make an appt and ask your doc for a scrip for one. Xanax works great for me but there are other options as well. Hang in there and keep me posted!
